Beary Colourful BOM: Taking Time Out Teal Bear

Teal Bear of Taking Time Out appliqué by Dione of Clever Chameleon

Today we meet the most chilled out bear of the Beary Colourful family. Please welcome the blue-green Teal Bear of Taking Time Out!

Teal Bear is ready for a holiday. Or a weekend of leisure. Or even just a few hours of unbooked time. He loves taking time out of his busy schedule to smell the roses or shoot the breeze. Today he is in the mood to head down the beach without any particular plan….. build a sand castle, collect some shells, have a paddle, or maybe just get some sand between his toes. Uncomplicated time with a few friends or family, or even  some relaxed alone time.

Beary Colourful Bear BOMPlease welcome the very refreshing Novem-Bear of Taking Time Out to the Beary Colourful family. His blue-green colours are of the revitalising and invigorating powers of water and recreation. Beaches, lakes, rivers – they all have a powerful attraction for people needing some time away from it all.

The eleventh bear in the Beary Colourful Quilt BOM series is adamant that you need to take a breather occasionally. Add this relaxed bear to your collection as an encouragement to find some restoration time. And then go check out the rest of the 2018 Color Challenge posts for other ideas of how to celebrate blue-green colours and enter for November’s Monthly Color Challenge prize. And scroll right to the end of the post to find out about two little prizes to be won right here on Clever Chameleon.

The Teal Bear of Taking Time Out

The Teal Bear is representative of all the calm spaces we carve out, or should carve out, in our hectic lives. Breaks don’t have to be long or expensive to be effective… a pleasant walk or reading a good book can make all the difference  to our state of mind. For me, nature is generally the best restorer, and I look forward to breaks spent in quiet natural spaces.

Teal Ted has a sandcastle on his tummy to celebrate time spent in rest and recreation. Creativity with no consideration of perfection or permanence. Sandcastles are very “in the now”. We know they won’t last until tomorrow and must be enjoyed as they are at the time that they are made. This motif has a few small pieces, but they can be ignored if you want a simpler project. It is not compulsory to add decoration or windows to your sandcastle! Or if you’d rather, swap the sandcastle out entirely for a beach themed fabric on the tummy panel. After all, quilting is supposed to be relaxing.

On the other hand,  if you’re feeling like a challenge, design your own sandcastle. If you can fit in the space provided, Teal Ted could have an entire sand citadel on his front!

What you will need to make the Teal Bear block

    • Fabric for the background of the block. Each bear block will require a base fabric square of at least 13.5″ by 17″ to allow leeway for trimming.
    • Thin batting for the trapunto layer if you wish to do the trapunto step. I use a polyester batting of 1/8th inch loft. You will need approximately 11″ x 15″.
    • Fusible paper-backed fabric adhesive (for example vliesofix). This bear needs more than most: 15″ x 12″ will be required for the Teal bear.
    • Teal fabric scraps for the main sections of the bear. The whole bear requires the equivalent of 9″ x 12″ of teal fabric. But he is built from pieces, so you can use multiple smaller scraps if you need.
    • White/light colour fabric scraps for the muzzle and tummy,  5″ x 8″. Or 10″ x 8″ if shadowing bothers you and you’d like to make the white components double layered (see the Red Bear post for a more detailed discussion of the shadowing problem).
    • Various coloured small fabric scraps for eyes, nose, mouth, inner ears, bucket, spade and sandcastle.
    • Machine embroidery or sewing threads to match your appliqué fabrics.
    • General tools: sewing machine, iron etc, teflon ironing sheet or baking (parchment)  paper, small sharp scissors, pencil, chalk/washout fabric marker, quilting pins, black permanent acid-free marker.
    • Optional but helpful: curved blade embroidery snips

How to make the Taking Time Out Teal Bear

Step 1

Start by laying a piece of parchment (baking) paper over the supplied appliqué layout template.

Tack down the legs, right arm and outer ears onto the parchment paper with a hot iron.

Step 2

Add the feet, outer tummy, spade and inner ears. You can position the spade, waving in the air like my son would do in excitement. Or you can rotate it to be facing downwards, the way it should be used!

Step 3

Add the inner tummy panel, the hand, the main part of the bucket and the head.

Step 4

Add the muzzle, the inner top part of the bucket, and the top tier of the sand castle.

Step 5

Add the mouth, nose, whites of the eyes, and the main section of the sandcastle.

Step 6

Finish off all the details…. the irises, the flag, the doors and windows of the sandcastle and the bucket handle. If these details are too small for your chosen method of appliqué, embroider them in instead. In particular, the bucket handle is not suitable for turned appliqué but can be done with fused appliqué (pictured, embroidered on or embellished with ribbon or yarn).

That’s it. Give your appliqué a good press and carefully transfer it to your background fabric

Secure the edges of your appliqué using your favourite method. Don’t forget to stitch in the facial details and the stick for the flag.

Comment for another chance to win

On top of the monthly prize for the blue-green link up at Patterns by Jen, I am offering my own little giveaway. For reasons previously confessed, I have two sets of spare bear parts that I don’t need. One set in the dark teal feather batik and another set in the lighter blue-teal hand dyed fabric. The only catch is that these pieces are reversed relative to the pattern I have released. There is no reason why this matters, a left handed bear is still as much a bear as a right handed bear. I will throw in the other required pieces and a reversed layout template to make your life easy in putting together a reversed bear.

All you need do to be in the running to win a set of teal bear parts is comment and tell me what you like to do to take time out. The two comments that make me feel most refreshed will be offered the pre-cut bears. Backing fabric and other notions required are not included. Entries valid worldwide unless prohibited in your jurisdiction. Entries close Wednesday 7th November 2018.

  1. My guesses for the black and white bear for December are: Decorating a Christmas Tree? Stacking presents?

  2. I have a couple of things that I like to do to take time out besides quilting-of course! I play the flute and so does my teenage son, so practicing together and working on duets is relaxing and fun. We have a good time. The other thing is playing with my fabric paints and stencils. It stretches me creatively and is freeing to just play. Sometimes I like the results; sometimes not. But it is a nice quiet moment.

  3. Thank you so much for this month’s pattern. He is really adorable.
The way I like to take time out is to grab a book by my favorite author (James Patterson), get a glass of ice cold tea, and go sit out on the deck where it is quiet.

  4. Well, the past weekend I went to a spa. That´s relaxing. And while
I´m a bit stressed out right now I also started to colour in my colouringbook for grown-ups:-D

  5. To take time out, I love to sit on my back porch in my rocking chair sharing time with my hubby and two dogs, enjoying the changing colors of nature this time of year (and occasional wildlife as it roams through the woods and yard), and drinking a hot cup of my special coffee blend (2 scoops of decaf + 2 scoops of half dark chocolate truffle and caramel drizzle mixed together!), while sitting and talking with my hubby! What’s even better is when the grands are with us and they are enjoying a cup of hot chocolate! Thanks for another cute and colorful bear, Dione! Love this dark teal batik!

  6. I enjoy James Patterson too, among others. Reading a book can take me anywhere I want to go. Love it.

  7. Somehow I scattered my comment. All in a day’s confusion I guess.
I love my little family of bears. Thank you Dione. I am quite smitten with the colour this month, and began scrounging around the sewing room looking for bits that would work for November. Founs some!
When I feel the need to relax, I do whatever strikes me as appropriate for the moment, sometimes its turning up the radio and listening to some genre that I love, or if I need to have quiet, I will find a book and get lost in it. There are times when I let my mind roam while I sit quietly and let the seconds pass by. Playing with bits of fabric is a very relaxing activity as well.

  8. This may be my favourite bear yet: ahhh teal, and the one you used is a fab fabric, ahh sand and sandcastles and beaches and sun and warmth… I just feel warm and fuzzy (not refreshed, plenty of that refreshing feeling here outside my door with the rain and wind and temps struggling to get out of the single digits (Celsius) for the next couple of days… So what do I do for time out? Sew on something unplanned, fun, that gets me digging in my boxes of scraps and stash. Or, curl up with a good book… Or, go for a walk on the beach near my house (in better weather than the past couple of days!) Hope things are okay off the blog. 🙂

  9. Well, I guess I didn’t scroll down far enough. I saw that teal was the color this month and I printed off the pattern. For some reason, I had the impression that the bears stopped at #11; I even asked my friend “Who does that??” – then I went ahead and made a 12th one in pink. Only after I did that and came back here for finishing instructions did I see the part about the b&w bear. Oh well, I like pink more anyway lol. Still not sure about finishing, though. 🙁
