Beary Colourful BOM: Thumbs Up Orange Bear

Beary Colourful Orange Bear appliqué by Clever Chameleon

I am positively excited that it is time to meet the Beary Colourful Orange Bear!

Beary Colourful BOM at Clever ChameleonApril 1st. But no fools here…. just us coloured bears! And it is time to welcome another teddy to our growing family…. the Orange Bear of Positive Attitude. Also known as Thumbs Up Bear!

The fourth bear in the Beary Colourful Quilt BOM series is cheerful like his yellow cousin, but it is his enthusiasm that sets him apart. Know anyone who thinks that “Everything is AWESOME, I want to experience it all!!”? Orange bear is just like them. Positively positive!

Hopefully you will give the new bear the two thumbs up!

The Orange Bear of Positive Attitude

April’s Orange Teddy is loud and irrepressible. A bit like his signature colour. And possibly the strongest extrovert on the Beary Colourful quilt. He approaches life with a positive mindset, determined to enjoy the opportunities and activities that come his way.

Orange Bear has a tendency to like things, see the good in things and in people. He admires others’ accomplishments rather than feeling jealousy. Orange Bear also likes to congratulate and encourage. He sees the future through a lens of hope. He is creative and innovative, thinking outside the box. Orange Bear is always looking for opportunities to give you the two thumbs up!

Orange Ted has a plus sign on his belly because he is positive today is going to be a good day. This tummy motif is the most simple of all the Beary Colourful Bears, so there is no need for a beginner’s option this month. Both my April bears have the same plus sign tummy motif.

What you will need to make the Orange Bear block

  • Fabric for the background of the block. Each bear block will require a base fabric square of at least 13.5″ by 17″ to allow leeway for trimming.
  • Thin batting for the trapunto layer if you wish to do the trapunto step. I use a polyester batting of 1/8th inch loft. You will need approximately 11″ x 15″.
  • Fusible paper-backed fabric adhesive (for example vliesofix).15″ x 22″ will be ample for the orange bear.
  • Orange fabric scraps for the main sections of the bear. The whole bear requires the equivalent of 6″ x 24″ of orange fabric. But he is built from pieces, so you can use multiple smaller scraps if you wish.
  • White/light colour fabric scraps for the muzzle and tummy,  5″ x 8″. Or 10″ x 8″ if shadowing bothers you and you’d like to make the white components double layered (see the Red Bear post for a more detailed discussion of the shadowing problem).
  • Various coloured small fabric scraps for eyes, nose, mouth, foot pad, inner ears, and tummy plus sign motif.
  • Machine embroidery or sewing threads to match your appliqué fabrics.
  • General tools: sewing machine, iron etc, teflon ironing sheet or baking (parchment)  paper, small sharp scissors, pencil, chalk/washout fabric marker, quilting pins, black permanent acid-free marker.
  • Optional but helpful: curved blade embroidery snips

Thumbs Up Orange Bear
The orange batik used on this bear is an Island Batik, given to me to use as an Island Batik Ambassador. Isn’t it glorious?!

How to make the Orange Bear of Positive Attitudes

Follow the construction method and fusing order for the Red Bear and you will have no trouble with the Orange Bear. The only significant change is that after you have placed down the arms of the bear you will need to add his hands on top. I hope this is pretty self-evident from the layout guide.

Orange Bear construction
Start by sticking down the arms, legs and ears on tp parchment paper.
Orange Bear construction
Add hands, feet, outer tummy and inner ears. Finish by adding the inner tummy piece and then the head, muzzle and facial features.

Once you have you completed the Orange Bear, you are a third of the way done in the entire series!

I hope you have a positive attitude to orange…… I struggle a bit with this colour, but I am very pleased with how my orange bears have turned out. They are going to look great with all the other bears on the Beary Colourful Quilt.

  1. Woke up this morning to see this awesome happy bear ready to give me a hug. Has put me into a great mood as I had a terrible dream before I woke up and my whole body from my teeth to my legs were stiff and sore. A cup of tea and orange bear and I am set for a stunning day. Thank you

  2. He is shining with positivity!!! Now let me find that superb orange batik that jumped into my hand when down south. I must have guessed there would be a Ted with his name on that fabric.

  3. This sweet little fellow gets my two thumbs up. These guys creep right into one’s heart with their cheery colours and winning expressions. I’m looking forward to having him join my little bear family. Thanks Dione.
