Did you know that Sunday just gone was World Friendship Day? How very appropriate, because it’s our Yellow-Orange Bear’s favourite day of the year!
Yellow-Orange Bear knows that many of the most precious things in life are people – family and good friends. In fact, building great relationships is his speciality, And right at the top of his list of great relationships are the respectful, fun, mutually supportive, loving friendships that make the world go around.
Please welcome the very cordial Yellow-Orange Bear of Loving Friends to the Beary Colourful family. Since you will be creating him, he will embody all of the traits that you appreciate in your closest friends. The people you know that you can really rely on, even if you don’t see them as often as you’d like.
The eighth bear in the Beary Colourful Quilt BOM series is cheery and bright and will always stand by you. Add this loyal bear to your collection to celebrate the wonder of great friendship on your Beary Colourful quilt. And then go check out the rest of the 2018 Color Challenge posts for other ideas of how to celebrate the colour yellow-orange and enter for August’s prize.
The Yellow-Orange Bear of Loving Friendship
Yellow-Orange Bear is cheerful and always ready to give you a smile, a wave or a pleasant greeting. He is great at listening, and when he asks how you are, he actually wants to know! And he is a great many things besides. He is genuinely happy for your successes, feels your losses as his own and misses you when you are away. He has your back, picks you up, keeps you grounded and pranks you mercilessly. Life is complicated but his friendship isn’t.
What a best friend looks like to you will of course be very personal. This is a thing that is unique to you – both the people you connect with and the best sort of friend that you can be to others. But loving friends surely have one thing in common everywhere – that they know the real you, and love you both because of and despite of everything. This bear is a pro at that.
Yellow-Orange Ted has two slightly different stars on his tummy that are sticking together. Because the best friendships have two participants who are naturally different yet equally important. This is a simple motif, so I haven’t arranged an alternative, but you can simplify it further by making both stars as solid shapes if you wish.

What you will need to make the Yellow-Orange Bear block
- Fabric for the background of the block. Each bear block will require a base fabric square of at least 13.5″ by 17″ to allow leeway for trimming.
- Thin batting for the trapunto layer if you wish to do the trapunto step. I use a polyester batting of 1/8th inch loft. You will need approximately 11″ x 15″.
- Fusible paper-backed fabric adhesive (for example vliesofix). 7″ x 16″ will be ample for the Yellow-Orange bear.
- Yellow-Orange fabric scraps for the main sections of the bear. The whole bear requires the equivalent of 10″ x 12″ of yellow-orange fabric. But he is built from pieces, so you can use multiple smaller scraps if you need.
- White/light colour fabric scraps for the muzzle and tummy, 5″ x 8″. Or 10″ x 8″ if shadowing bothers you and you’d like to make the white components double layered (see the Red Bear post for a more detailed discussion of the shadowing problem).
- Various coloured small fabric scraps for eyes, nose, mouth, inner ears, paw, and stars.
- Machine embroidery or sewing threads to match your appliqué fabrics.
- General tools: sewing machine, iron etc, teflon ironing sheet or baking (parchment) paper, small sharp scissors, pencil, chalk/washout fabric marker, quilting pins, black permanent acid-free marker.
- Optional but helpful: curved blade embroidery snips

How to make the Loving Friends Yellow-Orange Bear
This bear is as uncomplicated in construction as he is in his friendships. If you have made any of the previous bears, you will cruise through this one.
Step 1
Start by laying a piece of parchment (baking) paper over the supplied template.
Tack down the legs, right arm and outer ears onto the parchment paper with a hot iron.
Step 2
Add the feet, outer tummy, right paw and inner ears.
Step 3
Add the inner tummy panel and the head.
Step 4
Add the muzzle and the left arm.
Step 5
Add the mouth, nose, eyeballs and the lefthand star of the tummy motif.
Step 6
Finish off your Yellow-Orange Bear by adding the eyes and the second star in the tummy motif.
Give your appliqué a good press and carefully transfer to your background fabric
Secure the edges of your appliqué using your favourite method. Don’t forget to stitch in the facial details.
The Loving Friends Yellow-Orange Bear hopes you will choose to come and play with him soon!
