Getaway Blog Hop with Island Batik

Cat on a Wall quilt by Dione Gardner-Stephen of Clever Chameleon

Paisley Park meets Cat on a Wall

Welcome to my stop on the Island Batik Getaway Blog Hop. This is my last project as a 2018 Island Batik Ambassador, and accordingly, a biggie.

Back in July I received a “Surprise” package. Inside were glorious Paisley Park fabrics that had to be kept secret for the longest time! But today I can show and tell all. My instructions were to use as many of the different fabrics as I could to create a quilt of at least lap size. And if I wished, to incorporate themes of travel and destinations.

So much beautiful fabric, so many quilt options. But I’d had an idea that had been waiting it’s turn for a very long time, and around September it finally it dawned on me that the colour and contrast spectrums of the Paisley Park fabrics would be perfect for it. My Cat on a Wall design from eons ago.

Read on…. I’ll introduce you to my Cat on a Wall quilt – Paisley Park Getaway style. Of course, surreptitiously getting you hooked on these new fabrics in the process. 🙂 And then I’ll tell you how you could win a 5″ strip pack of 20 of the fabrics used in my quilt. I’d love you to be able to have a play with these fabrics, they are even better in real life.

Triangle Friends: Something to Squawk About!

Triangle Friends bird appliqué by Dione Gardner-Stephen of Clever Chameleon

Today marks a Huge milestone for me

I am very excited to announce my very first quilt published in an independent magazine! It is called Triangle Friends and is now available in Issue 26 of Make Modern. I’ve been sitting on this news for simply aaaaaaages, and it’s such a great feeling to finally be able to tell you all about it. 🙂

Triangle Friends is a fun little quilt. Very quick and easy to make, with very little piecing and only straight edged appliqué. The latter means you can prepare most of the appliqué pieces by rotary cutter. And with the exception of slowing down for the corners, you can also stitch them down at a good speed!

If you’ll humour me, I’ll tell you all about it. And then, to celebrate my first publication, I thought I should do a little giveaway contest…. for a postcard sized mini quilt and copy of the magazine issue with my pattern in.

Love with a Twist Throw Quilt Assembly Instructions

One of the three options in the Love with a Twist free quilt-along at Clever Chameleon in 2019.

Let’s get this party started!

Last post I announced my latest big idea. The BOM…. or perhaps it should more accurately be the BOF? (approximately block of the fortnight)….. available here for 2019. Whatever we are going to call it, let’s get this very casual and fun quilt-along off the ground!

In this post you will find my first lap-size quilt top constructed pre-appliqué and a pdf download of the instructions so you can start yours too. Of course, it is not necessary to pre-assemble your quilt top before you applique the blocks. You can definitely choose to appliqué all your balloons before you assemble them. But information is power, and after today’s post you can make some informed decisions on how you wish to proceed.

Happy New Year, Happy New BOM!!

Love with a Twist free 2019 BOM at Clever Chameleon

I’ve had an idea! I’m elated, inflated and just a little bit twisted up with excitement ….

Situation normal then! As you know, I am not usually short of slightly twisted ideas and quilty enthusiasm. But I have had a hard time settling on a new BOM to replace the Beary Colourful Bears. There are so many possibilities, but nothing that quite grabbed me until now. The bears were so much fun and a hard act to follow.

So, I’ve been musing over this quandary for several months, with a mental list of criteria I wanted my 2019 BOM to satisfy. What to do? A BOM needs to be interesting all year. It needs to be relatively simple but not too repetitive. Probably most importantly, it needs to make me feel happy….. afterall, I am going to be running this sucker for ages and ages!

And I just wasn’t 110% happy with any of my ideas. Until ……. a quilt based on one of the simplest but funnest things of all time – balloon animals – burst into my head!

So, I am excited to announce the free BOM at Clever Chameleon Quilting this year will be “Love with a Twist”. A series of animal appliqués, shaped as if they were made of sculpting balloons. A party in your sewing room all year, with no risk of deflating or popping suddenly just when you least expect it. I hope you are grinning. I’m grinning. Like an eight year old who’s had too much cake and just scored the best balloon at the party.

CAKE written in balloons

Read on to find out more about the Love with a Twist BOM that will be available for free here at Clever Chameleon for all of 2019.
