Always Choose Tropical: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday

Always Choose Tropical colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

Always Choose Tropical

I am slowly working through a huge backlog of blog-relevant news and quilty happenings! I can’t believe July has been such a huge month, it certainly wasn’t forecast that way. Or maybe I just wasn’t paying attention! Anyway, we’re halfway in, and I still need to post two Love with a Twist patterns (aiming for one on Friday), an unboxing post for Island Batik (next week), and a number of other smaller things I’m messing around with.

But before all that, I really want to give you the lowdown on the Chameleon challenge quilt that I made for our recent Festival of Quilts, “Always Choose Tropical”. It was so much fun to make and show, so let’s do that now.

Success at Festival of Quilts 2019

"Always Choose Tropical" chameleon quilt at the SA Festival of Quilts. By Dione Gardner-Stephen of Clever Chameleon

The Chameleon gets his 15 seconds of Fame!

The Chameleon will have to forgive me for taking so long to get around to making a chameleon quilt now, don’t you think? Not only did I make him a quilt FULL of cheeky chameleons, but I showed it in our local Festival of Quilts, and it won its category’s blue ribbon. That ought to keep him off my case for a while!

The weekend just gone was the annual Quilters’ Guild of South Australia’s Festival of Quilts. After judging, entrants who are successful get a specific invitation to the awards and opening ceremony, but no indication of the flavour of their award. Happily, happily, happily I got one of those calls. So I toddled off into the city centre on Friday morning to accept my prize.

Four competitive ribbons

Turned out, it was four prizes, one for each quilt I entered. I had dared hope that the chameleon quilt would place, because I put my all into that one. Anything that wasn’t perfect on that project met Mr Ripper, pronto. But two of the other ribbons were pleasant surprises, and the third was more of a very pleasant shock.

If you will indulge my excitement for one post, I will show you what I entered in our annual quilt show and what I was awarded. Two of the awarded quilts were made primarily for this blog in the past year, so I hope you will also accept my thanks for reading and giving me a reason to make more quirky quilts. 🙂

The Colour of Music: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday

Colour of music colour scheme at Clever Chameleon

Today I finished my Island Batik Ambassador project for June 🙂

In the works here for a while now, has been a new book bag for my daughter to take to music lessons. And today it’s done. It features a paper-piecing technique that is new-to-me, Island Batik fabrics, HOBBS Thermore batting and six music motif block patterns by Juliet of Tartankiwi.

Read on to see my new, and very simple, drawstring bag. And to see how the Chameleon got himself into a little strife after our latest Colour & Inspiration party. Happy Tuesday!

Chameleon Capers – Colour & Inspiration Tuesday

Chameleon Capers colour board at Clever Chameleon

Finally, a Chameleon quilt in the works!

You’d think, with my love of all things critters and quilting, and an imaginary (shhh, he doesn’t know) Chameleon friend, that I should have/would have done a chameleon-flavoured quilt by now. You’d think. But it’s been over two years now since the Chameleon first took the internet by technicolour storm, and still no chameleon quilt. Not even a chameleon table runner. Awww poor unimpressed Chameleon!

Well, all that is about to change this month. I have until the beginning of July to complete a small quilt that has been a design idea since forever and has hit the top of the queue thanks to a Guild Challenge. It’s doable and it will be fun.

Welcome to another Colour & Inspiration Tuesday!

Love with a Twist: Fabulous Fish

Fabulous Fish appliqués for the Love with a Twist quilt along at Clever Chameleon

Our last Fishy Post for the foreseeable future

We’ve been stuck on the theme of all things aquatic here for a while now, haven’t we? I’m not really sure how that happened…. maybe because ideas spark more related ideas and I have been following the ideas flow a bit more freely than usual lately. Maybe it’s just a bit of good old fashioned coincidence, since Love in the Twist was planned out in January. Either way, I promise we will move on at some point to another topic soonish…. maybe in July 😀

June will see yet more more pond creatures brought in from the cold. A balloon frog and a balloon duckling. But as May inexplicably disappears, today you have a fishy Love with a Twist pattern to collect right here first. Fabulous Fish is one of our options for Love with a Twist Block 5 – the alternative to Rascally Rabbit. Keep reading to collect your fish balloon pdf pattern and find out all the details for making the most of the next block of the Love with a Twist quilt along.
