Finally, a Chameleon quilt in the works!
You’d think, with my love of all things critters and quilting, and an imaginary (shhh, he doesn’t know) Chameleon friend, that I should have/would have done a chameleon-flavoured quilt by now. You’d think. But it’s been over two years now since the Chameleon first took the internet by technicolour storm, and still no chameleon quilt. Not even a chameleon table runner. Awww poor unimpressed Chameleon!
Well, all that is about to change this month. I have until the beginning of July to complete a small quilt that has been a design idea since forever and has hit the top of the queue thanks to a Guild Challenge. It’s doable and it will be fun.
Welcome to another Colour & Inspiration Tuesday!
About time too, Chameleon Wrangler
The chameleon as a “thing” is such a ridiculous and fun concept that it is almost embarrassing that I haven’t done a feature quilt for this crazily incredible creature yet. The colour changing, the amazing tongue, the totally ridiculous posing…. what’s not to love, or to appliqué? Chameleons are amazing.
To rectify this serious omission, I have captured the Chameleon in some of his favourite poses and made a start on some appliqués. Thank goodness for a digital cutter that can cut out these tricky shapes for me in a matter of minutes.
I won’t reveal too much just yet, but here are some pics of progress. Already this quilt has attracted more than its fair share of attention…. my 8 year old stopped by my workstation this afternoon and gave me quite a commentary on what he saw in the design. Quite remarkable actually, as I have quilted for his entire living memory, and it is a part of my life that he rarely engages with to any significant degree. I hope that is a sign that the project is heading in the right direction!
I’d like this project to eventually be destined for the sewing room wall as a fun reminder of my Chameleon capers with you all. 😀
When the Chameleon wasn’t busy modelling, he was reading last week’s link ups….
This week Roseanne from Home Sewn by Us hooned through her sewing space with unrelenting bouts of circle work. Her latest quilt is quilted with one huge magnificent spiral. About which she wrote you a fantastic tutorial, so you can do it too!
Doesn’t this texture look fabulous? One day soon, the Chameleon and I are going to try this!
I hope you’ll be going around in circles and spiralling out of control very soon too! In a good way, of course!
And Ann of Laughing Gas Quilts linked up her Bear in the Woods quilt finish – oh, and it is a very impressive finish.
I love Ann’s version of Lorna McMahon’s Mod Bear Paw. The colours – stunning! The quilting on the bear – stunning. And the connection to the recipient – very fun and very genuine. Make sure you head over to Ann’s blog and take a look.
Doesn’t this picture put you in mind of a bonfire in the woods? Or is that just me and my wishful thinking? Kum ba yah anyone?
Your turn – Are your inspiring projects hiding in plain sight?

I love the chameleon quilt! It is going to be awesome! Thank you for such wonderful patterns and for always being so upbeat. I look forward to your posts.
Good morning. Oh how exciting and fun with this latest quilt. I am loving your blocks so far. I hear you about your son. I started quilting when I was in high school, dropped it and picked it up again when both of our kids where 8 and 10. Our daughter being the youngest saw me quilt/sew all the time and never really paid much mind to it. Except to pick out a fabric for a piece of clothing and or halloween costume I was going to make for her. Until she was a freshman in high school. I was making a quilt with wild cats heads in a jungle of leaves. Bright and wonderful. I was simply fussy cutting the heads out into squares and surrounding them with black borders and putting them together. She avidly watched me and finally started to suggest ideas on what would look nice. So I started silently taking her suggestions. When the quilt was finished, well you should have seen her eyes ( at the point for sure I knew where the quilt was going ) Yes she got the quilt and today at 33 still has it over her chair. But to go back, she asked me to show her how to quilt. Can I? Oh gosh absolutely. My dear daughter knows how to quilt today and has started a few. Her career has stepped in and life has taken over, but she does enjoy the creative process of quilting. If we lived closer, not 5 states away from each other, we would find time to do this together.
Hi Dione! Thank you so much for the shout out!! I really can’t believe there hasn’t been a chameleon quilt before this. And your cutting system would definitely be needed for those appliqué pieces to be perfect and fit together pleasingly. I look forward to seeing this come to fruition. Fabric choices will definitely be key, I think, to capture the changeability of its nature. ~smile~ Roseanne
This chameleon quilt is going to be awesome!!!! Can’t wait to see the finished project!
Cute post and I know the chameleon will be decked out in all his colorful glory. sorry I dont have pretties to link up today, just my cutting table. Waiting for fabric to arrive so I can start on that surprise quilt that I spoke to you about.
How exciting when one of your KIDS actually notices what you are doing! They’ll give me the obligatory “thanks, Mom” when I make them a quilt but don’t really pay attention to what I do on a day to day basis. Question: Is your linky party a regularly scheduled thing now or is it fairly random when you feel like it? I’m not very observant so forgive me if this a dumb question. I’m definitely going to join in!
Jumping Jimminy-Color changing chameleons…that is just going to be the awesome! I can’t wait to see this finish!
My miniquilt this week is green to go with your beautiful chameleon.
I love your quilt. It will be so bright and fun! I would love to make one similar to it. Thanks for the inspiration.
Adorable modeling pictures and even cuter appliques!!
This will be wonderful! It is hard to believe you didn’t make one before – but the previews are so adorable. Hope to have something to add next week, my work has slowed down, but is about to pick up by mid next week!
Hi Dione, that is going to be a great quilt. Shame on you for not making it earlier (lol). Guild challenges are a good thing if this cutey gets to the top of the pile 🙂
