Colours on Show: Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Linky Party

Colours on Show color scheme at Clever Chameleon

I have been inspired to keep working on my designing and quilting this week by lots and lots and lots of local quilt talent!

There were so many great quilts and so many talented quilters at our state guild Festival of Quilts over the weekend  that I could almost feel myself getting more and more talented, just through osmosis. Luckily the show was only 3 days in length, or I’d probably have exploded with transferred brilliance. hahahahaha 😉 Silliness aside, there was a lot of wonderful inspiration at the show and I have a plethora of quilty thoughts to muse going forward.

Here are a just few more insights to some of the show goings on for your own weekly inspiration…..

I wish I could show you just about every quilt from the show, but the Guild has rules. If you’d like to see all the ribbon winners they will be on the Guild website in due course. The best in show is already there.

But here are a small selection of quilts from friends of mine. Remember how I went to Judy’s place last weekend for a quilt retreat with Joy of Days Filled with Joy? Well, Judy had a very successful show, with four ribbons to her name. Here are two of her quilts:

Floating Hexagons quilt by Judy Simmcock
Another of Judy Simmcock’s quilts, Floating Hexagons won a VIP award

If you’d like to see more from Judy and other quilters in her circle of influence, you can see them on her post here. Pat, who was keeping an eye on my scant 1/4″ seams (or lack there-of) on the retreat, also won a ribbon with one of her beautifully embroidered quilts.

Over the course of the weekend I had the privilege of getting to know some of the other quilters, in particular a fabulous local modern quilter, Amanda Kelly. Here is her quilt that came first in the same category as my Winding Ways quilt that came third.

I certainly didn’t feel bad coming in behind such a great quilt made by such a lovely person!

Here is Amanda’s other entry, third in the Professional Modern quilts. This quilt has its basis in a block called the “improved nine-patch”. I’m always learning something!

Heather Hopkins of Adelaide Sewing Centre also got a ribbon for her very fun modern pineapple quilt “It’s definitely not a Watermelon”. When the Guild site is updated with all the photos I will point you in the direction of that one. Heather is queen of all things FMQ.

Do you remember the Quilting Bee that my daughter took part in?

Here’s the quilt that my daughter won from the raffle she entered by sewing a block.

This quilt was sewn and donated by Kathleen Rossini, who made and donated no less than six quilts for the festival, including three as prizes for the sewing bee participants. Thank you Kathleen! This quilt is bigger than I initially expected….. big enough to use as a single bed topper, which is exactly what my daughter is already doing with it. She loves it. And so does the cat. 🙂  I have some of those Australiana fabrics in stash left over from quilts I gave to our sponsor kids in Thailand, so perhaps I can encourage my daughter to make herself a matching cushion.

A last round of thank yous

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people and companies that sponsored the Festival of Quilts in general and those who sponsored my prizes in particular. My first ribbon was sponsored by a professional longarm quilter in the Aldgate, in the Adelaide Hills. Thank you Niki Waterhouse of Pernikity Quilting. My third prize was kindly sponsored by the Rocky River Stitch & Chat group at Gladstone, a town in the mid-north of our state. Thank you ladies for your generosity towards your fellow quilters.

I was also the very pleased recipient of two king size rolls of batting made of Nu-Wool wool/polyester blend. donated by Quality Always. I look forward to using these – I haven’t actually used wool-based batting before. MiniJubuck is a brand that has its roots in the South East of South Australia where I grew up, so there is a bit of nostalgia happening here too. Thanks Quality Always. 🙂

If you would like to know what I spent my prize money on, you’ll have to stick around and keep an eye on the blog. I intend to be using my purchases for some upcoming projects soon so you’ll have to wait….. I could apologise for being a tease….. but I’m not sorry. 🙂

And now, it’s time to look at last week’s quilt colour party features

Kathleen's Chameleon

This week Kathleen of Kathleen McMusing linked up her latest UFO in her sights for a finish. A fantastic string quilt for benefit that just needs a binding. Kathleen has a fun post….. pointing out World UFO Day (July 2nd) and a modesty block. Don’t know what a modesty block is? Well, neither did I, and you’ll have to pop over to Kathleen’s to find out now, won’t you!

Cheries ChameleonOur other feature today is Cherie of Cherie’s Quilting Journey, with a massive start on a pattern she is testing for Denise of For the Love of Geese. This is the centre of Nostalgia Twist, which you may have seen previously in green and white most, and before that, red and white. Check out Cherie’s post to see her plan for the full quilt and Denise’s blog for the original. And if you are into paper-piecing, introduce yourself to Denise, I know she is often looking for pattern testers.

I hope you will visit today’s great reads and have July goals of your own to work towards. And my sincerest thanks to everyone who linked up last week. If you were featured you can find a badge of honour here.

  1. These are all gorgeous quilts. I didnt catch the name of your quilt that inspired Colour Tuesday but I love it! There are some tiny pieces in there and i’m wondering how you were able to piece them so accurately? I’m about to embark on a new quilt that has 1″ squares so I am curious.

  2. Gorgeous quilts and I love the colors for this week’s color inspiration quilt! Congratulations to you and your daughter on your “scores!!”

  3. Thanks Dione for the feature. I will proudly put your badge on my blog. Congrats on your ribbons at your Festival of Quilts.

  4. I love the “Improved 9-Patch”; once upon a time I thought of making one. It remains on the back burner.

How fun for your daughter to win the raffle quilt!

  5. I’m so pleased about your quilt show fun and awards. I am so pleased to be featured again! You are too kind.

  6. Thanks for sharing those beautiful quilts. I’m glad you made new friends at Joy’s retreat! You sort of snuck your third place in there, unless I missed another post or forgot. =) Congratulations!
