Tulips while I quilt
My hubby and daughter bought pink tulips with the groceries last week. I hope you’ll agree, they were a very fine decoration to enjoy while I was working on the final stages of my Pond Life quilt. I was particularly struck by the perfect match of the green of the tulip leaves with the greens of my chosen fabrics. So in honour of well-matched flowers and a finished quilt we have the pastel version of the Pond Life colours this week.
Yes, you read that right. Pond Life is finished, and on the correct side of May 1 to boot! Actually, there are no boots in my pristine pond – just water lilies and frogs and other water critters. Today’s post also sees my finished Island Batik/Accuquilt baby quilt hanging out at my local wetlands, and our weekly colour & inspiration party features. Enjoy the eye candy!
Pond Life – the Recap
The April Island Batik Ambassador challenge was to use the Accuquilt Ready. Set. GO! system supplied to me to create a baby quilt. The Island Batik fabrics, HOBBS batting and most of the Accuquilt dies used in this post were also provided free to me to facilitate this quilt. I chose to create a 8″ QUBE sampler quilt that also doubled as a frog and lily pond montage, now known as Pond Life. You can find out all the details of this quilt in last Tuesday’s Colour & Inspiration post.
Since that report, I have completed the quilting on Pond Life – which mostly involved stitch-in-the-ditch around the pieces of the flowers. I decided it might be nice for them to be smooth and lightly quilted in contrast to the rest of the quilt.
And I have added a dark blue binding.
Then I took it out into the wild…..
Before I collected the kids from school today, I stopped by my local damplands to take some pics. This spot is supposed to be (and has previously been) lush wetlands, but we are currently having trouble sourcing competent rain dancers. Luckily for you, the internet is still smell-free and I found some angles that make the most of the swampy water that remains. Enjoy my little photo shoot!
I hope you have enjoyed this month’s quilt journey with me. Many thanks to Island Batik, HOBBS and especially Accuquilt for making this quilt possible.
Let’s see who caught the Chameleon’s imagination last week
Carla from Creatin’ in the Sticks linked up her bright rainbow dresden quilt. This quilt is so happy, I love it. We all need a bit of uncomplicated happy in our lives, so don’t miss this little gem.
The Chameleon also felt just a touch of a celebrity as he imagined new fancy Carla windows for his mind palace. He hopes this fun quilt also sparks your imagination and gives you a little lift. 😀
On a much more serious and educational note, Frédérique at Quilting Patchwork Appliqué introduced the Chameleon and me to a type of quilt I had not heard of before. A Tifaifai quilt. A bit like a Hawaiian quilt but from Tahiti, I have added this to the list of quilty things I *need* to try. Frédérique has some great info about Tifaifai quilts and a pattern for one of her own designs on her blog too.
Thank you to everyone who linked up their fabulous quilts and related projects.
Can you colour the Chameleon next week?

This quilt turned out gorgeous. I love the life that it portrays. And the colors are so lovely. Well done.
What? No puns? You did have a very nice alliteration in your title though so that counts. 🙂 I think your Pond Life quilt is about as perfect a quilty interpretation of a frog pond with lily pads as you can get. One of my very favorite quilts that I have seen lately.
Stunning! I really love your color combo and the frogs are a really nice addition. Get well to your son,
Congratulations, your Pond Life quilt is beautiful! Great into the wild photos 😉
Thank you for featuring my Tifaifai :^)
Wonderful and so glad your pond is pristine. We must have all the rain dancers as it has been bleak here with rain more often than not! Love the outdoor photo shoot and the lack of smells in the internet world – sometimes a good thing (bad smells or baked goods present a problem we can avoid).
Pond Life is gorgeous as are the photos of it. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
Pond Life is beautiful, and I agree about the tulips. They are beautiful!
This one’s a beaut, but then that’s not an unusual for you. I really like the setting you chose for photographs.
Oh that turned out so nice! Love the pink and green scattered in the blue – well done!
Your pond is wonderful!!! I love the colors and the pop of pink water lilies! Those frogs are perfect!!! Great idea to fold the fabric and get more design out of the die!
Love the way your quilt turned out, well done, and the flowers look pretty good too. When are you going to do that rain dance, forgotten what rain looks like.
I love your pond life quilt. The blocks are the perfect background for those frogs to hop around on.
Dione, that quilt turned out AMAZING! I love the way your water lily flowers and frogs puff up more than the background, like they’re floating on the surface of the water. The frogs are such a cute touch, taking a really lovely sampler quilt into something truly special. I’m sure that Island Batik and Accuquilt are thrilled with what you’ve done with those goodies!
Hi Dione! Great job on the photos! All of them make the finished quilt just shine, and those tulips are the perfect addition as well. I’m enjoying some pretty yellow ones on my desk at work, and they make these gray raining days much more pleasant. I missed Frederique’s post about this Tahitian quilt but I will check that out. It does look very Hawaiian-inspired but that makes sense since they are both near each other. ~smile~ Roseanne
Hi Dione, your pictures are so lovely.
I love your finish – and the photo shoot produced some great shots!
Thank you Dione, for the accents in my name ;D You are so sweet
I have loved watching you here and on IG create this month’s (now last month’s) challenge, especially your wizardry with the cutter! Love the dark blue binding and all the ‘in the wild’ shots, froggies love the swamps. 🙂
Dione, what a cool use of our GO! Leaping Frog die! Rebecca is right, we love your design and are so happy you participated in our Baby Quilt Challenge! Thanks for sharing!
