Forest Fairy Crafts ebook giveaway

Forest Fairy creations by Clever Chameleon, inspired by the Forest Fairy Crafts book.

Welcome to our Forest Fairy Crafts book giveaway day!

Hiya! As promised last Sunday, I am back today to show you all the things my daughter and I made from Lenka Vodicka-Paredes and Asia Currie’s latest book, “Forest Fairy Crafts through the Seasons”. It is the sequel to Forest Fairy Crafts published in 2013.

Forest Fairy Crafts through the Seasons is a cute book that leads you far enough down the garden path to complete any of the projects as shown – but also leaves you plenty of scope to adapt them to your own crafting style. BYO personal tastes, substituted supplies and imaginations are highly encouraged. However, if you have misplaced your crafting mojo, there is also plenty to get started with in the book by simply following the instructions. And I reckon, that once you get started, your imagination will invite itself on over anyways! 😀

Today I’ll tell you how you can enter to win an e-copy of this book for yourself or your favourite fairy-lover. There are opportunities in this post, as well as on the rest of the blogs on the Forest Fairy Tour.

The Forest Fairy Crafts through the Seasons book is available in print but my review pertains to the e-version, which I was kindly given to work from. While I always prefer real books to screen time, having the patterns in a printable version did have one appreciated convenience. Once my daughter and I had decided what we were making, we could simply print and play. The e-book is also the version to be won at each tour stop, and it should be noted that if you don’t have access to facilities to print the pattern section from the e-book, you will struggle to make many of the projects. In this case, the paperback is definitely better for you!

Gathering Supplies

Craft supplies

Glancing through “Forest Fairy Crafts through the Seasons”, I see that I could easily make many of the projects from scraps and debris I already have. A few small bits of felt, a couple of stray pipe-cleaners (that’s what we call chenille stems here in Australia), some buttons, thread, ribbon…. all these things seem to accumulate when you are a crafter with kids. The only item I didn’t have on hand was wooden beads. But I improvised, and used some unwanted felt balls instead.

Actually, it turns out that the felt balls weren’t unwanted at all. Within 24 hours of coming out of the cupboard they had all but disappeared, along with the felt flowers pictured. You are looking at the culprit. Ha! I did manage to recover most of them. Only five were under the fridge, two rooms from where they started. It seems every time he lost one, he simply went back to stash for another!

I made a Fairy

I could have got carried away and made lots of fairies/gnomes, to be sure! Thankfully I was reined in by my limited supply of pipe-cleaners. I actually introduced you to my cheeky boy fairy on Sunday. If you didn’t see what he was up to then, you should duck over to that post for a quick look.

Although it is getting into winter here, there are still a few flowers around. Adelaide has a mediterranean climate, so plenty of garden species grow over our coldest months. But no, the sunflowers are not in season, they are a cut-flower gift that I happily conscripted to photobomb my neglected garden.

My daughter preferred the Treasure Pouches

My girl, who is eleven, agreed to help me road test the book by making one of the patterns (for a price). She chose to make a version of the ladybird pouch.

She did a good job, yeah?

The ladybird charm was from among her own crafting supplies, dating back from when she was into making friendship bracelets. She also decided to substitute black press-studs for the ladybird spots, which gives it a nice texture. The handle is made from a piece of cord that I kept in my ribbon collection when I previously recycled a paper gift bag.

My Fairy thought the new bag was just right, goodnight!

In return, I had to make the cute cat stuffie craft from the book, for her to keep, of course. Made in black and white to match our own precious fiend feline.

This was my favourite project that I made from the book. The collar and bell were a last minute addition. Actually, when I was looking for a container to take all my projects outside for photography, it was in the bottom of the otherwise empty tub I chose. The fairies must have sent it….. or perhaps it is just the trimming off the chocolate bunny I ate from Easter…….

Before there was a Cat there was a Mouse

If you visit the Chameleon regularly, you will know that one thing I like, and craft a lot of in one form or another, is critters. So the first craft I actually made from the book was the mouse. It is designed as a lavender smelly, but I actually intended to fill it with catnip for Mew. Except when I went to get my tub of catnip, I couldn’t find it. Either it is in a “safe place” or I gave it to the local animal shelter when I cleaned out some things. I can’t remember which. Because the project is handsewn, I can easily retrofit catnip later if I get inspired.

Did you notice the mouse tail is half a shoelace. Don’t ask me why I had shoelaces in stash, because I don’t know. I guess I inherited them. But it is Mew’s favourite part of the toy.

I drew the mouse features on with felt-tip pen rather than using small pieces of felt or buttons, because I intended to let the cat harass this creation. Pets, like small children, should be kept from choking hazards.

And no, Mew does not choose to cuddle the mouse. hahaha. He was just too cold and sleepy to stop me posing him with it. Hence the partly opened eye of mild annoyance. Mew has very fine soft fur from his tropical cat genetics, and he does not like winter.

Another Mouse

The cat owning a mouse, and the girl owning a cat, of course generated a great deal of boy-jealousy. So I had to make a second mouse, a blue one, for my son. Luckily, I still had half a shoelace……

Since the fairy has had his unicorn ride taken away, he opted for a mouse steed instead.

Unfortunately for the mouse jockey, my boy did not want a “useless fairy” to go with his mouse. The fairy wouldn’t stay on when the mouse was swung by the tail, for one. My boy did say I was welcome to make him a Black Ninja instead….. I am assuming with really long, twisty legs so that he can ride the mouse at high G-forces. Bahahaha.

Even More Inspiration

Well, it turns out that there is a Ninja pattern in the first Forest Fairy Craft book. As well as the Christmas Elves and the Angel that came to mind as I was testing the second book! Actually, it seems that Lenka and Asia have already covered just about everything I thought of to extend this craft, so I didn’t end up reinventing any wheels. If you want to see what’s in the first book, I found lots of pics in their @forestfairycrafts account on instagram. 1. My name for him would be Whisper as fairies are very quiet people even boys

  2. I think his name is Clement. 🙂 How nice to find another Australian who loves to make these fairies… I had not thought of using felted wool balls for heads- that is very clever! Thank you for allowing us an opportunity to win this e-book!
