Let’s get this party started!
Last post I announced my latest big idea. The BOM…. or perhaps it should more accurately be the BOF? (approximately block of the fortnight)….. available here for 2019. Whatever we are going to call it, let’s get this very casual and fun quilt-along off the ground!
In this post you will find my first lap-size quilt top constructed pre-appliqué and a pdf download of the instructions so you can start yours too. Of course, it is not necessary to pre-assemble your quilt top before you applique the blocks. You can definitely choose to appliqué all your balloons before you assemble them. But information is power, and after today’s post you can make some informed decisions on how you wish to proceed.
Shopping My Stash
In my last post, I said I didn’t have fabric pieces big enough to make the background of the Love with a Twist quilts. Technically that is true… but it wasn’t very imaginative, was it? I have a more-than-reasonable stash and a desire to pare it down a little. So I made a pact with myself to think a bit more creatively towards using some of it, at least in putting together a throw size quilt. Surely I can manage that…..
And I will admit, coming up with my first plan from stash was not that difficult. When I started ferreting around in my fabrics I realised I had two smaller pieces of a batik beauty that was perfect for the block backgrounds. And the two pieces added up to just a tad more than I needed. Sold!
And then I discovered two other batiks that were very similar to each other, that I could use for the sashing and border. Originally I would have had a yard of each, but I’ve previously used some and both pieces were about 23″ long, WOF. They are the same print, but one has more colour inserted through it than the other. I opted to use the lighter print for sashing and the more heavily patterned fabric for the border.
Here is my final product, ready to start accepting appliqués. I will have no trouble getting a small quilt flimsy like this under my machine to do the appliqué steps. But you will have to judge how easy it will be for you in light of your own circumstances. You may prefer to appliqué the blocks independently.
Tips and Considerations so far
- If you choose not to pre-assemble your quilt top, cut the blocks slightly bigger than stated. After all the handling during the appliqué it will be good to have leeway for trimming off any damaged edges.
- If you do pre-assemble your quilt, I suggest stay-stitching or zigzag stitching around the edge of your quilt flimsy, to protect the edges (and especially the seams that reach the edges) from damage during the appliqué process. Stay stitching is simply a line of stitching around the perimeter of the quilt about an eighth of an inch from the edge, within the seam allowance for binding.
- There is one partial seam to be sewn in this pattern. It is an easy one, and if you are not familiar with partial seams, then this will be a great one for you to learn with. Partial seams are a skill useful in many great-looking blocks, as well as in repairing or substituting patchwork in flimsies that are already substantially sewn. I hope I have covered it sufficiently in the pdf, but if you strike trouble please let me know.
- If you leave the border off this throw quilt, you will have a quilt measuring 40.5 x 58.5″; a good size for a toddler comforter.
- If you would like to do the twin size quilt, there are a few minor size changes necessary to allow all the blocks to nest together. The instructions are not in the pdf available today, but will be presented another day in the not too distant future.

What’s next?
Well, the poodle pattern is all drawn up…. So as soon as I’ve tested it, we will release our first appliqué block. Woot woot!
I have still to settle on a fabric combo to make up the second throw size quilt included in this quilt-along. It’s proving more tricky than the first one. Of course I’ll show you that when I get that far! I’ll need it before we get to January’s second block.
And let me know if anything in the quilt assembly instructions are not 100% clear…. Or if I’ve made any errors! We’re in this together, remember!

Happy New Year! Love your fun designs. Planning to follow along with Love with a Twist – who doesn’t love balloons! Thanks for sharing your talent.
Wow! I am so excited to start playing with this one Dione. Great layout. Thank you for your generosity and talent. I will do the appliques on single blocks and assemble after all blocks are finished. I didn’t read for errors, but on first read the directions seem straightforward.
One question on my second read. It may seem self evident, but I need to check for my understanding. When you say “press open” does that mean press the seam open? as compared to pressing the seam to one side? Thanks
Oh I am excited about this quilt. They will be so fun. Thank you for all your work.
So cute … definitely going to do this one. Thanks for sharing ..
What a fun BOF this year. Looks like I am going to have to search for some fun fabrics here! winky winky!!! 🙂
Perfect, I have just found out the family where the Bear quilt is going will have another new addition to their family later this year.Found the bears, the background, and the wadding the other day, so MAYBE this week can get the final two all done? Love those balloons.
Thank you. This is going to be fun. I will be making quilts for donation for toddlers and pre-schoolers.
Awesome – now to figure out how to make it full-sized!! Thanks, Dione!
Hi Dione! Wowee, you have been busy. A lap size quilt all put together and ready for appliqué pieces. Hmm, I usually do not put the whole top together first unless the pieces overlap blocks. I am excited to see the poodle!! ~smile~ Roseanne
I love the fabrics you used for the background and sashing!!! Gorgeous!! Thank you for this BOF!!
Thank you for all you do.
Love your background quilt! Can’t wait to see the applique bits added 🙂 xx
This is going to be fun. Thank you.
Cute quilt ;))
Oh, those batiks are just PERFECT! That background is SO appealing! What a great idea. I am going to go through my batik tote tomorrow and see if I have two that are half that wonderful together. Thanks!
I am looking forward to participating in this BOM. B
