I know I said the Balloon Dog appliqué was going to be the next step in this sew along….
But if you’ve been quilting for any length of time, you’ll know that sometimes projects have their own agendas. And, so it is for this one. The floppy-eared dog appliqué pattern is actually very nearly finished (yay!). But it has been pipped at the post by finished instructions for the twin sized Love with a Twist quilt construction. So let’s roll with it – let’s get the last of the technical details for this sew along out of the way and clear the deck for a pretty continuous party of appliqué from here on.
An appliqué festival it truly is going to be around here for the next month or so! I have the balloon dog block coming out asap (psst, there is a sneak peek at the end of this post). Also an appliqué mini quilt to start off the 2019 Island Batik Ambassador year, and an appliqué mini quilt for the “Show Us Your Wings” Blog Hop with Just Let Me Quilt (which also doubles as a bonus block for the Love with a Twist series). Plus two more core blocks for the Love with a Twist series! Busy appliqué fun!

The twin quilt is done slightly earlier than scheduled because I acquired the perfect fabrics to make it from. 🙂 Island Batik gave them to me. Always the best reason! And since I still haven’t settled on fabrics for my second throw size quilt, it seemed prudent to get on with what I had so that I would have a background for the floppy-eared dog.
I’m not-so-secretly glad to have these instructions done. One less plate for me to keep spinning. It will be sew much easier and efficient for me to not be switching between piecing and appliqué for a couple of weeks.
The twin sized version of the Love with a Twist Quilt uses all the blocks from the two throw quilts plus a couple of extra bonus blocks. Download the layout instructions here:
Tips and Considerations so far
The same tips and thoughts apply to this quilt layout as the throw size versions. Read the tips I wrote for those here. The Love with a Twist twin quilt construction is like the throw size quilts, just with more blocks, thinner sashing, and a simpler border. There are also a greater number of partial seams to sew in this layout – three in total. But they are all pretty straight forward.
As always, please let me know if you come across errors in the instructions. I am only one or two steps ahead of you guys. And while I have taken a lot of time and care in writing these instructions, they are not independently tested or guaranteed error free. Think of this more as a sew-along with friends, coffee and banter, not a quilting class.
And since we are all here sewing along as friends, want to hear a small war story about this quilt?
Remember when I said there was good reason to be familiar with partial seams? For quilt repair, among other reasons? Well, I had cause to put my seam ripper where my mouth was this week. I’m calling my story “The Horror of the Beetlejuice”. It goes like this…..
We had a record hot evening last Thursday. Which suited all the local insects just fine. Somehow a small flying orange-brown beetle got inside the house and Mew, my furry helper found it. He was so excited, yowling and rushing around until he caught it. Of course the beetle was not so excited about this and unbeknownst to me, objected by way of releasing yellow bodily fluids on my partially made quilt top.
The next morning, when I discovered yellow spots on my quilt top… I initially thought it was a bird message, applied while the fabric was on the washing line after it’s pre-wash. However, a spot clean did nothing to remove the spots and a thorough stain soaking only faded them a little. Then I remembered Mew had had his beetle on my fabric briefly before he had been evicted, and I had to come to the conclusion that these spots were beetlejuice. And they were not washing out anytime soon. Arggggggk!
Another Dodgy Fix
No worries…. this is an appliqué quilt right? Cover the spots! That’s what we do with appliqué quilts, isn’t it? Except that, of course, the appliqué for that block does not cover the stained area.
However, I realised that if I put the appliqué on upside down, it did. Of course I have no intention of putting an appliqué on my quilt upside down, so out came the Quick Unpick. Rippit, rippit, and then three previously unplanned partial seams later, it’s all fixed. The stained fabric has been removed, rotated 180 degrees and sewn back in.
The lovingly cat-applied beetle-dye yellow spots are still there but will be under a swan by the time this quilt is done. Sorry Mew, I wasn’t enamored with your embellishments this time around.
So that is all there is to say for now
I’m dying to tell you more about the fabrics I used to make this quilt top and will use for the appliqué, but that has to wait until the 2019 Island Batik Ambassador year kicks off very early in February. In the meantime you can see the colour scheme I am using, as it is featured here (Creative Blonde) and here (Steph Jacobson Designs) in the current Island Ambassador Blog Hop.
Speaking of which, have you been keeping up with all the Island Batik Getaway hop posts and competitions? You can find last week’s schedule here. There is still one more week of fabrics and quilts to go on this hop. I will post the remaining links on Tuesday in our next Colour & Inspiration post, or you can find them here on the Island Batik website.
In the meantime I will get back to writing up the floppy-eared dog appliqué pattern. I am up to the testing stage……. see! I’m still planning on having this pattern out in January… the kids go back to school on Wednesday and hubby comes home from New Zealand. So it might happen. Wish me luck!
The Chameleon turns rainbow with pleasure when he hears from you. I am more reserved, so I will respond in gratitude by email instead. Now that it’s your turn…. Scroll right to the end, leave me a comment and tell me, what do you think? Thanks for connecting!

ohh bad bug. good thing you caught it. i am loving the get a way hop. your balloon animals are so sweet. thanks for sharing your expertise.
Wonderful to have those instructions done! That story about Mew and the beetle is too much – and so glad you could reconstruct. It is always great when that works out isn’t it! I often do that if I need to fix some little thing – a talented seamstress told me it was okay and ever since then I do it!
I am so excited about this quilt. I love the “feel” of it and can’t wait to get started. Unfortunately, that could be a while since we are re-carpeting and that required packing up my entire sewing room! I’m already feeling the withdrawal pains. In the meantime I get to read your wonderful Blog and enjoy seeing (hopefully) pictures of what everyone else is doing.
So there really is such a thing as Beetle Juice huh? LOL!! Silly me, thought it was just a crazy movie! So excited about this fun BOM!
Love the floppy ears, and in batiks, a beauty. I have found that liquid napisan works wonders for hard to remove stains, like those from pollen on lily stamens. Well done to rip, rotate, and recover!!
Thank you for being so generous with your talents.
As I reread this post Dione, I couldn’t help wondering when you sleep? Your energy must be unlimited, and for me your enthusiasm is infectious. I look forward to each new post ,not always getting all the info on my first read. Also wanted to mention that I like the way your headings are arranged. If I need to refer to a specific project, I don’t have to hunt around forever.
My admiration for Island Batiks and their ambassadors continues to grow as I follow their Island Getaway bloghop. Creative minds, and a generous sponsor.
Oh my gosh! Beetlejuice for real! LOL I’m so sorry, but thank goodness for applique!! And I am in LOVE with that doggy! I am so far behind I’ll never catch up, but have to so I can start on this!! Actually two of these! LOL Thanks, Dione!
Dione, this is the cutest BOM around! What a great idea. 🙂 Hey, P.S. – as I dove into the very intimidating task of quilting up my long-waiting Ruffled Roses top, my Toucan post card mini that you made me last year (which I have pinned on the wall to the side of my longarm) really helped me get over myself and actually do the work instead of freezing up. Thanks again!
