If you promise to show me yours, I’ll show you mine…..
I am in the planning and design phase of my next quilt project for Island Batik and I’m looking for the sweet spot where the available fabric, the design brief and my personal preferences intersect. The Island Batik theme for June is “Modern Batik” and the fabrics I have chosen are some of the fat eighths sent me from the Island Batik Elementz range. These fabrics were given to me for use in my role as an Island Batik Ambassador.
For my colour palette, I have pulled the pinks, oranges, chartreuse greens (lime greens) and blue-greens from this collection. And a red. Namely. the colours in today’s Modern Elementz colour board at the top of this post. In all, I have cherry-picked 16 of the 28 fabrics in the collection and I have a good start on a design…. and it’s only the 5th of June! Ha!
The Elementz collection is bright, bold and strongly geometric. So probably an obvious shoe-in for the Modern Batik challenge, but the real question is what to do with it?
Well, I have decided to try morphing a traditional block into a modern design. A little while ago Craftsy had one of their all-you-can-watch weekends and I did enjoy a class by Ann Petersen called Playing with Curves (affiliate link). One of the traditional patterns that Ann uses to teach her class is Winding Ways, and I’ll admit I fell for this pattern pretty hard all of a sudden.
Do you know the Winding Ways block? In case not, here is my drawing of it.
There are a few ways you could modernise this block, but my choice this time is to pull it apart into its three basic shapes and use them as appliqué templates to create a new, only tenuously related, design.
Here’s my start on my Modern Elementz Winding Ways Quilt
I’ve traces a stack of the windings ways shapes onto paper-backed fusible adhesive.
And attached them to my chosen fabrics.
“What am I going to do with them?” I hear you ask. I’ll show you more when I’ve done more. 🙂 Works in progress are always welcome at the Tuesday Colour Party!
Now, I’ve shown you mine – lets take a peek at some from last week’s link party.
If I have my modern challenge quilt done early enough this month, I have another project that is not my design, but I would like to do. This is not a particularly common occurrence, me making other people’s designs, but I was very taken with one of Susan’s new patterns at Quilt Fabrication: Hold It Together. It made me laugh and I’d like one of these for my sewing room……. I think it would look great made from the scraps of the Elementz fabrics I am using for my Modern Batik challenge.
But the Chameleon couldn’t be convinced to disguise himself as a paperclip. He wanted to feature another of Susan’s linked quilts – a blue and white Hunter’s Star quilt complete with quilting suggestions. Of course, I had to say “Yes”, as I think this a gorgeous quilt too. So, treat yourself and head over to Quilt Fabrication for these two recent offerings and lots more besides.
Another link the Chameleon really liked last week was Melody’s version of the second block of the current Fall into a Quilt Along series. Fabulous colours…. actually now I’ve come to think about it, they’re not so different to today’s Modern Elementz colour board. A variation on a theme. lol
The Chameleon thought he’d like to go on a picnic in a basket like this. Thanks for sharing, Melody @lutzcats!
If you’d like to know more about the Fall into a Quilt Along, check out Bobbi’s post here at Snowy Days Quilting , which she also linked up last week.
I hope you will visit today’s features. And my sincerest thanks to everyone who linked up last week. I really enjoyed visiting you all. If you were featured you can find a badge of honour here.
I’ve shown you mine, and then some! And I’ve exposed the Chameleon as a basket case. Now it’s your turn to share. Link up to this week’s Chameleon’s Colour party!
What are you working on, or have recently finished in your sewing room? The Chameleon and I really want to know. Link up a blog post, a Flicker pic, an IG post or just a photo from your computer. Then come back next week to see who has caused the Chameleon to get distracted. Luckily he has monocular vision and can keep one eye on your project and one eye on my sewing at the same time!
Guidelines (more detail here):
- Link up your latest or recent quilt excitement. All construction stages welcome, from a quilt plan, a fabric pull, quilt blocks, a flimsy, to a finished quilt…. if you have a photo you love, we want to see it.
- You have 100 characters in the link description…. tell us who you are and what wonderful colours you’ve chosen. Inspire us with your colour scheme!
- URLs are not necessary to link up, but if you have one, please use the direct link (not your homepage). A link back is appreciated but not necessary.
- Do you use muted/pastel/low volume colours? Fantastic….. the Chameleon wants to see Everything, not just the bright stuff!
I hope you will link up a quilt you are working on or have just finished. Come back next week to see if you’ve caused the Chameleon to disguise himself as your quilt.

What wonderful fabrics to play with, and Winding Ways will show those colours off perfectly. Down here, OOPS… over here, Purple Ted is doing well, and I had a surprise visit from the family, a friend’s son, d-in-law and wee Lucy, about 17th months old now, up from the South Island to visit their Mum, my friend here. Lucy will receive the finished TED Quilt for her second birthday next year. They loved the Teds, but I need to do another green academic one, as the Dad did a Masters Degree, and is an engineer. BSc Ted might end up on a bag for our own graduate. Always good to have a back-up. This is a huge tease from you, how can we wait to see what comes next for the batiks.
Ha! Mr. Chameleon looks fantastic in a basket! He’s always welcome. I’ve got some of those Elementz…going to drag them out and make something! Thanks for the shout out.
Fantastic fabrics. Love how bright they are and the geometric shapes. Can’t wait to see your creation.
Great colors, very appealing no matter what they become. I like that you chose winding ways. I look forward to seeing what happens!
I do know and love the winding ways quilt block. In fact I was just showing it to hubby a few nights ago. They make beautiful 2 color quilts and he is all about 2 color quilts. Cant wait to see what you do with the bright fabric.
I’d happily share my design in progress but I haven’t taken a photo of the fabric and I only have 5 shades of blue so far. One more shade of blue to go and then decide on a background color.
Oh my goodness…I find that Elementz fabric line leaving me all hot and bothered 🙂 I’m not familiar with the Winding Ways Block but I am sure looking forward to seeing it in you quilt.
Hi Dione, I love what you do with your link-up and your clever chameleon 🙂 Your batik colours are fabulous. What a colour palette. Looking forward to seeing your quilt.
I love these fabrics!
The colors are stunning and the geometric shapes give them a really modern look. I am not used to it in batiks.
