My Happy Place Row Along Show and Tell Day

Panda Friends colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

Welcome to the My Happy Place Show and Tell Colour Inspiration Tuesday Day!

Today is the last day of the “My Happy Place” row-along and blog hop – the Show and Tell Day. This is the day where a few of the “My Happy Place” blog hoppers come back for an encore….. to show you how they finished their rows (or multiple rows) into usable quilted items.

Being Myself with You appliqué by Clever ChameleonI have finished my “Being Myself with You” row into a wall hanging with a small extra border and some free-motion embroidery. The My Happy Place embroidery template is included in today’s post for free if you’re keen to do it too. Also, if you have not grabbed your free copy of my “My Happy Place” pattern, consider this to be your friendly final reminder. It will only be available for free for one more week on my blog.

There is also one last give-away-something for everyone- a discount code for 20% off all EQ products valid for use before the 23rd October.  I really hope you have enjoyed this row-along, collected lots of wonderful patterns and found lots of new bloggers to keep an eye on. 🙂

Now, how to make the most of Being Myself with You…….

How to turn the Being Myself With You row into an even cuter wall hanging!

If you don’t already have it, you will need the pattern for my row. You can download it from this post here. These instructions are for a row that finishes at 9″ × 30″.

In addition to the materials listed in the pattern you will need:

  • 2″ fabric strips for the borders. You will need two, 30″ strips and  two, 12.5″ strips. I used the darker of my two background fabrics to make the borders,  Essence  9025-66 by Northcott fabrics. Another big thank you to Northcott for supplying fabric for this blog hop!

  • binding fabric – again I used Essence  9025-66 by Northcott. This is a busy little project and I didn’t feel it needed a distinct border. You will need three WOF strips at an appropriate width for you favourite binding method.
  • batting – I used a scrap of thin polyester batting, HOBBS Thermore of approximately 18″ × 38″
  • backing fabric – 15″ × 36″ or larger
  • stabiliser for machine embroidery – I used PolyFuse by Victorian Textiles.
  • embroidery thread
  • removable fabric marker such as washable or disappearing marker or chalk
  • the template for the My Happy Place embroidery design

My Happy Place Embroidery

***Download the My Happy Place embroidery template pdf here***

Important: Please! Make sure your printer is not scaling the file before you print (uncheck any “scale to fit” buttons or similarly evil autocorrecting scaling options). And check your printout. To get the original size embroidery template the check box included must be 1″ square.

Step 1 – Add borders to your row

Once you have completed your “Being Myself with You” row, sew the two, 2″ x 30″ strips onto the sides of your row. Press. Then sew the 12.5″ strips top and bottom. Press again.

Step 2 – Add the My Happy Place embroidery design

Layer your quilt top over the batting and embroidery stabiliser. Secure with pins, basting spray or use fusible batting and/or stabiliser. Mark the My Happy Place embroidery design out using your favourite method. I chose to cut the embroidery design into a stencil made of freezer paper and used pounce chalk to mark the lettering and smiley faces. I have included two versions of the embroidery templates in the pdf – cuttable outlines and solid traceable templates. If you have a ScanNCut machine or a craft knife you can make a template like this from freezer paper too.

The My Happy Place embroidery template is designed to fit once across the top and bottom of the wall hanging and three times along the sides. Add the smiley faces in the corners and between the phrases to space things out nicely.

Step 3 – Stitch the My Happy Place embroidery design

Stitch over the design 5-6 times to build up the thread to a readable font, like I did. Or use a satin stitch to fill in the embroidery. Or of course, you can hand embroider the words and smiles.

Step 4 – Layer and quilt your wallhanging

Add the backing, secure the layers by stitching in the ditch between the row and the borders. You can add more quilting than this, but I didn’t want to detract from the subtle pinwheels I had pieced into the background.

Step 5 – Bind you wallhanging and hang in a happy place. Enjoy!

Bind using your favourite method. For small wallhangings like this one, I like to use single-fold binding or a facing. This time I added single fold binding. Add a hanging sleeve or other means of display.

Which just leaves us with our usual Colour InspirationTuesday business….. a row-along feature and our link party!

Life Guard Clever ChameleonThis week’s Chameleon’s feature goes again to Susan at Quilt Fabrication. I know that the Chameleon abused her hospitality already only just a couple of weeks ago…. but Susan linked up more ideas on how to use her “My Happy Place” row-along pattern last week. So as this week’s most topical feature (and because my local outdoor pool opened for the summer this week too, happy dance), we are gatecrashing at Susan’s again!

Susan has shared a free lap quilt layout for her row if you collected it during the row-along. She has also added 3 extra swimming stroke appliqués to her pattern bundle for sale. So, if you are into swimming, or cheer for someone who is, you may want to revisit Susan’s “In the Swimming Pool” row for more swimming-themed quilt ideas. If you need a swim team flavoured quilt, this will be a lifesaver. Tee hee. Thanks for the inspiration Susan.
