The Red Buoy – Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Linky Party

The Red Buoy color scheme by Clever Chameleon

Colours good enough for Paul Signac are good enough for me!

On the weekend I was treated for my birthday with a ticket to the current exhibition at our state art gallery. This exhibition has my name all over it – it is called “Colours of Impressionism”. A collection of masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay, this exhibition shows the progressive use of colour over time by Impressionist and then Neo-Impressionist painters.

The Red Buoy (La bouée rouge) was painted by Paul Signac in 1895. It is one of the attention grabbers of the Colours of Impressionism exhibition and is featured on the front cover of all the advertising and handouts. No wonder really, it is an easy painting to love with its vibrant complementary colours and serene setting.

For the curious, here are some of the particulars of The Red Buoy: Oil on canvas, H. 81; W. 65 cm. Location: Saint-Tropez, France. It is painted in the Divisionist style of the Neo-Impressionist movement, which is explained in detail here for anyone who wants to diverge a little from quilting into serious art discussion.

I  wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to use The Red Buoy colour scheme in a quilt. Perhaps something celebrating Spring and flowers. What would you design in the Red Buoy colour-way?

And, speaking of quilts and artists…….

Let’s have a look at the features from last week’s link party

I don’t think it’s any secret that the best way to catch a designer’s attention is to share a block or quilt made with her pattern. I don’t think I will ever tire of seeing my patterns interpreted by others, and it’s humbling to think that someone likes my work enough to make one too.

So first up I want to show you Jeannette’s interpretation of the latest bear in the Beary Colourful BOM series. Jeanette shares on IG @quilted_collie. She always adds an interesting twist to her Beary Colourful BOM blocks, this time adding extra balls, giving him a distinctly circus feel. Cute!

Turids chameleonTurid, a fellow Island Batik Ambassador who blogs at Den syende himmel, recently put up a great tutorial on making scrappy star blocks. If you want to use up some colourful scraps and make star blocks without worrying about lining up and preserving all those points, then this is the tutorial for you. I’ve marked this one for later. I see some of these in my future. 🙂

And Danette from Nettie Sews and Lucky Quilts linked up a quilt she recently finished for her nephew Colin. I will admit I am a sucker for blue and brown colour combinations at the best of times. But I also particularly love the light and dark contrasts in this quilt, so this is a beauty in my eyes.

Knot Dramatic colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

Danette’s quilt reminds me of a favourite brown and blue colour board I featured almost exactly a year ago. So now I know what the Knot Dramatic colour scheme looks like in real life with a few bright blues thrown in, and I am still loving it. Thanks for sharing, Danette.

You might like to take a look at the back of Danette’s quilt too, especially if you are a big fan of modern quilts.

I hope you will visit today’s features. And my sincerest thanks to everyone who linked up last week. I really enjoyed visiting you all. If you were featured you can find a badge of honour here.

Now it’s your turn to share. Link up to this week’s Chameleon’s Colour party!

What are you working on, or have recently finished in your sewing room? Link up a blog post, a Flicker pic, an IG post or simply a photo from your computer.  See if you can get the Chameleon to turn quilted with happiness. We’d love to see your quilting colours.

  1. How fun to have a day to view beautiful art! A quilt out of those colors would be lovely, and I can think of a few fabric lines in those soft tones.

  2. Thanks for the Feature! I have been enjoying making the monthly bears. I can’t wait for the rest so I can finish the top. The quilted collie.

  3. As always, loving these colors. One day soon I will have to print out one of these color cards and visit a fabric store.
