Show and Tell Day! Lots of show-standard handicraft eye-candy, the winners from my Island Batik blog hop contest revealed and a quilted postcard all in one glorious crafty post today!
I haven’t had any sewing time this week, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been super busy with lots of things quilt and craft related. Join me today in congratulating the clever winners who named my dragonfly quilt on my stop of the Island Batik Great Outdoors blog hop. See the postcard mini-quilt I sent Jeanette for her win from our Teddy Bear’s Picnic. And also lots of pictures of fun and diverse handicrafts at the annual show of the Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society of South Australia . Grab a coffee and come with me to the Royal Adelaide Show!
The Dragonfly Quilt has a Name!
The huge Island Batik blog hop is all finished, so it was time this morning to give my daughter a list of all the names submitted for her quilt.
She went a bit bug-eyed when she saw the list was over 80 names long….. but she recovered well, and settled to the task over breakfast. By the time she had eaten, she had an answer for me……..
So, without further ado…. the name my daughter has chosen for her quilt that she snaffled from my Island Batik blog hop is…..
“Shimmer Light, Shimmer Flight”
This name was put forward by “Happy”, who is from the UK and has chosen the bright collection of fabric pieces from the Victoria and Albert collection.
There was also a second bundle of fabrics set aside for an entrant with an address DownUnder. Of the entries with an entrant who identified as Aussie or Kiwi, my daughter preferred the name “Dragonfly Dreaming”. The first person to suggest this name was M. Bertic. Congrats, I have sent you an email.
Another Winner in Our Midst
About a month ago I declared winners for the Beary Colourful BOM half-way Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Well, there was a little delay on my part in producing the promised quilted postcards because of time pressures. But I did get there in the end, and Jeannette now has her postcard, so I can show you what I sent.
When asked her preference, Jeannette said “Surprise me with something uniquely Australian”. So I decided a Koala (a beary-shaped “not-a-bear”) with our flag, some native flowers and a boomerang, hanging out by the billabong with a platypus probably covered most bases.
I also used this as an opportunity to try creating my own svg cut files for my brother ScanNCut, which was very successful after the first few failed attempts. I can now cut as many 3″ koalas as I could possibly wish for! lol
The Royal Adelaide Show
And, as I said in the intro, it is Royal Adelaide Show week. I am proud to say. my daughter entered a crochet rug into the 8-10 year olds section of the Junior Textiles. And has walked away with her second blue ribbon in as many years. You go girl!
Not to be outdone, my five entries walked away with five ribbons! Say what!?! I know! No one was more (pleasantly) shocked than me! Here’s the breakdown.
A first in “Embroidery, any article, using free motion machining, not computerised” – I entered the Fairy Owl. Her friend the Pirate Owl got first in the same category last year, so now she can tell him where to stick his conceited little beak if he continues to crow about it.
A third in “Christmas Theme, any article” – I entered my “White Christmas” table topper.
Also a third in “Wallhanging, any technique” – I entered my “2018 – Year of the Dog” mini-quilt.
A third for “Shadows of Auntie Green” in “Quilt, made by one person, any size, machine quilted”. This is a really nice result for this little quilt, as this is a very broad category.
And the total shocker – first in “Quilt, Art/Pictorial or Landscape/Portrait Quilt, made by one or more persons. Hand or machine quilted. Hand or machine pieced”. In a moment of madness I actually later wondered “what was I thinking?” about, I entered my “Celebrate South Australia” quilt I made last year. Goes to show, you just never know!
Here’s some other beauties from the handicrafts and cooking section of the show…. I thought these were fun! I hope you enjoy them!
A hippy WV cake that reminded me of Sally Manke’s quilt project for the Island Batik Great Outdoors blog hop. 🙂
A model boat submitted by Michael, our neighbour a few doors down (he’s a retired engineer and makes extraordinary model steam trains but this year he made a boat.)
Beautiful crochet……
More Owls…..
Fun animal sculptures…….
Fantastical dresses…..
Yup, that is really pasta on there…… 🙂
And a felt Bilby! Awwwww!
Last but not least a very small selection of my favourite quilts in this year’s display…..
A Denim star quilt
A Wool Embroidered Quilt
An Ocean Collage Quilt by Val Giles and Prue Wheal
Look at the detail…. love the Lion Fish!
And the best in show quilt….. an antique table-cloth appliqué quilt by Chris O’Brien…….
Phenomenal quilting. With a binding treatment I haven’t tried yet…… !!!
SQUIRREL!!!!! 🙂 Bye!
I am in awe!! Congratulations to you and your daughter. I can’t say anything else! So lovely!!!
Congrats to you both.
Congrats and Well done to you both, and so deserved, ribbons galore to hang up at home. And the quilt names, truly lovely and fit your. now your daughter’s quilt so well. What a variety of goodies to see at the show.
Congratulations to the prize winners, and congratulations to you and your daughter on your ribbons! Thanks for giving us a peek at the show too!
Hello, I love your year of the dog mini quilt. I am the year of the dog,and was wondering if there’s a pattern I can purchase. Thanks kim
Congratulations to you, your daughter and the winners. Yaay. More eye candy for us!
Hi Dione! Great job on all the ribbons, and especially huge congrats to your daughter. It looks like she did a fabulous job and was rewarded for her hard work! What a pretty name for the dragonfly quilt. I can’t imagine going through 80 different names to pick out the best one! ~smile~ Roseanne
Good choices of names by your daughter, and congrats to you both for your wins. Love your ‘Celebrate’ quilt, and the Aussie themed postcard.
Wow, there is lots going on here. Happy, and M Bertic, congratulations on having your quilt names chosen. They are both fun names. Dione, your daughter will surely have shimmery dragonfly dreams under this beautiful quilt.
Kudos for the family wins at the fair. That’s awesome. And thanks for showing us some of the entries from various categories. It is always interesting to see what others do..
First of all WAY TO GO!! I am so impressed with all your winnings this past year, personally I think __ should have won a first, as it’s just so incredible and I’m only judging it from my computer screen, not in real life where I bet it is breathtaking. The bilby (which I’ve never heard of but have now googled) looks REAL! And now I’m so sad that the Lesser is extinct, and the Greater is endangered… flippin’ humans, hate ’em. Yay for a beautiful name for your daughter’s beautiful quilt and for her second ribbon! I totally agree on the resemblance to Sally’s quilt, and just what IS that binding technique? Scrunched up balls of fabric along the edge?? Hmmm…..
Congratulations, on your ribbons, and congrats to your daughter as well! Looks like a great show, I haven’t been for years, must do it again one day.
No wonder you had no sewing time this week. You were too busy collecting ribbons. Glad to see your lovely quilts are getting some of the praise they deserve. Congrats to you and your daughter!
Congratulations to you and your daughter!! Awesome creations! I still think Shadows of Auntie Green should have won a first place ribbon! Thanks for sharing your ribbons and the other winners, as well!
