Pinwheels and Pretties: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday

Pinwheels Mystery Quilt Progress

Over a year ago I started a quilt that will actually, one day, be for me! I started it at a Pick-A-Case mystery retreat with Judy in Bordertown. Which I attended at the invitation and insistence of my at-the-time-unmet internet blogger friend, Joy (of Days Filled with Joy blogging fame).

But once I was home from that retreat, the quilt dropped like a stone in the priority queue and stalled. I’m sure many of you will be familiar with the troubles associated with finishing a project for oneself over all the other important and urgent quilts in the works! So, until this past weekend that mystery retreat quilt has laid largely untouched.

What was so special about this past weekend that it got such a quilt back on track? Well, I returned to Judy’s place to spend some more time with her and Joy and other quilter friends. This time my goals were to play with our collective AccuQuilt GO! resources, and to get some more done on “that quilt”! We had a lot fun, and I even made some on target progress too. 😀

Always Choose Tropical: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday

Always Choose Tropical colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

Always Choose Tropical

I am slowly working through a huge backlog of blog-relevant news and quilty happenings! I can’t believe July has been such a huge month, it certainly wasn’t forecast that way. Or maybe I just wasn’t paying attention! Anyway, we’re halfway in, and I still need to post two Love with a Twist patterns (aiming for one on Friday), an unboxing post for Island Batik (next week), and a number of other smaller things I’m messing around with.

But before all that, I really want to give you the lowdown on the Chameleon challenge quilt that I made for our recent Festival of Quilts, “Always Choose Tropical”. It was so much fun to make and show, so let’s do that now.

Success at Festival of Quilts 2019

"Always Choose Tropical" chameleon quilt at the SA Festival of Quilts. By Dione Gardner-Stephen of Clever Chameleon

The Chameleon gets his 15 seconds of Fame!

The Chameleon will have to forgive me for taking so long to get around to making a chameleon quilt now, don’t you think? Not only did I make him a quilt FULL of cheeky chameleons, but I showed it in our local Festival of Quilts, and it won its category’s blue ribbon. That ought to keep him off my case for a while!

The weekend just gone was the annual Quilters’ Guild of South Australia’s Festival of Quilts. After judging, entrants who are successful get a specific invitation to the awards and opening ceremony, but no indication of the flavour of their award. Happily, happily, happily I got one of those calls. So I toddled off into the city centre on Friday morning to accept my prize.

Four competitive ribbons

Turned out, it was four prizes, one for each quilt I entered. I had dared hope that the chameleon quilt would place, because I put my all into that one. Anything that wasn’t perfect on that project met Mr Ripper, pronto. But two of the other ribbons were pleasant surprises, and the third was more of a very pleasant shock.

If you will indulge my excitement for one post, I will show you what I entered in our annual quilt show and what I was awarded. Two of the awarded quilts were made primarily for this blog in the past year, so I hope you will also accept my thanks for reading and giving me a reason to make more quirky quilts. 🙂

But seriously, can you resist this face?! This adorably agile amphibian is the second option for Block 4 of our Love with a Twist appliqué series. Which puts him in direct competition with the Duck of Attitude from June 21.

Can you choose? Or do you have to make two throw quilts to fit them both in? Of course you can just opt to make the big twin size one and have them play together. 😀 Keep reading to collect your balloon frog pdf pattern and find out all the details for making the most of the next block of the Love with a Twist quilt along.

Love with a Twist: Qwazy Quacker

Qwazy Quacker Duck appliqué from the Love with a Twist series by Dione Gardner-Stephen of Clever Chameleon

“A duck walked up to the lemonade stand…..”

Last post, Denise commented that my balloon duck appliqué has attitude. 😀 As unintentional as that actually was, I agree. And in light of that comment, my duck appliqué suddenly reminded me some of the duck from The Duck Song by Bryant Oden.

….. and he said to the man running the stand, “Hey! bup bup bup…..”

“Got any Grapes?! “

Bahahahaha. That legendary song has helped my family through countless moments/hours of boredom over the years. Driving a long way? No worries, play The Duck Song. Waiting at the doctors? No worries, play The Duck Song. My kids have even added extra verses of their own on occasion. If you thought the Rubber Duckie earworm from Tuesday was cruel, get a load of The Duck Song stuck between your ears! What is it about ducks that causes them to be the subject of annoying songs anyway?

Your reward for smiling and nodding while I go on about duck songs is the next free pattern from the Love with a Twist series. Also in this post, a couple of housekeeping items…. we announce the winner of the Forest Fairy Crafts ebook and also remind you about a correction to the Fabulous Fish block pattern from May.
