Rats! Colour & Inspiration Tuesday

2020 – Year of the Rat

In the beginning there was the Rat. And the Rat jumped the queue.

According to Chinese legend, it was the Rat who (somewhat dodgily) won the Emperor’s race that decided the identity and order of the Zodiac animals. And so it is the Rat who is the first animal of the 12-year Lunar Calendar cycle. As one version of the story goes, the Rat caught a ride in the amiable Ox’s ear to cross a river during the race, but then abused the favour by dashing across the finish line first, claiming the honours.

And it seems that the ancient precedent for the Rat jumping the queue still holds. I started designing the Lunarcy quilt in 2018 with the Dog appliqué, and then followed in 2019 with the Pig appliqué, but it is the Rat appliqué that is released first. It seems only fitting though – 2020 is the Year of the Rat, the Year of the Lunarcy quilt, and coincidentally, also somewhat dodgy.

And so, today is the day to grab your copy of the Lunarcy Rat appliqué pattern. I hope you enjoy it. 🙂

No Sewing, but Plenty of Planning

Too busy to sew here… which is Not Good, but I keep telling myself it is only for a season. And hopefully that season is nearly over….. just like the Year of the Pig. The Year of the Rat starts soon, on the 25th January 2020. Which also just happens to be “moving week” for us.

So, I’m still madly doing more urgent things than sewing. But in between the sorting and the packing and the cleaning and the kids’ swimming lessons, I have been planning. And drafting. I mentioned last week that I thought that a Chinese Zodiac/Lunar Year quilt BOM was on the cards…. well I have a first draft of the whole thing, and a bit of a plan. Something to look forward to, to go with all of my other fresh starts. 🙂

A brief moment to wish you well. See you next year!

It is times like these that I am reminded why colours, creativity, quilting, blogging and connecting with people all over the world are activities so important to me. Australia is doing it tough this summer, with devastating fires having now hit every State; several more jaw-dropping tragedies unfolding today, even as I write. It is good to have something positive to be outward looking to, to balance the bad news and heartache a little.

So while I am not really in the mood to party tonight, I am still thankful at the turn of this year. Thankful for personal safety and two healthy kids who are fit to burst at the thought of staying up “all night”, the youngest for the first time (if he makes it through to midnight awake this time, poor kid! lol). Thankful for the magic of colour, and for the inspiration that people generously share on the internet, and for the cross-cultural language of creativity. And also thankful for all the bloggers who have become my internet friends and real life friends, thankful for all the readers who have shared a comment or made one of my quilt patterns, and thankful to Island Batik for helping me find my groove in the past two years.

I am also looking forward to new creativity, with relish, after this bit of forced break. I’m still packing and sorting our yesterdays like there is no tomorrow. All the while actually thinking about “tomorrow”…. and working around the Help, of course!
