Better late than never, right? It’s a few days overdue, but my November Island Batik challenge quilt is finished.
The Chameleon is Back. In full Colour!
It is really nice to be presenting a rainbow quilt today – after two fun but black and white posts. I do truly love the drama of a good black and white quilt or the cuteness of a panda appliqué. But black and white is not my natural go to for a finished quilt, whereas the Island Batik Paisley Dots batik collection is totally within my comfort zone.
What’s not to love about a rainbow!?!
Cozy Log Cabins Challenge
November’s Island Batik Ambassador challenge was to make a project based on the log cabin block. I could have done any one of a huge number of projects – the humble log cabin is versatile and a favourite of mine. But in the end I decided to make a new kid’s quilt.
If you remember, I chose these Paisley Dot fabrics for my November challenge quilt. I combined them with the Island Batik fabric “Egg White” to create a maze quilt where a tired teddy could choose a path to bed. Or not.
The fabric I used for the bear appliqués is a brand new Island Batik release called Blonde Ale Leaf Vine from the Brookview collection.
The terrific fabric that makes up teddy’s blanket is one from the Island Batik Elementz collection. It’s a scrap from my first Ambassador fabrics earlier in the year. Sadly I think it is sold out and discontinued.
I had wanted to show you my quilt finish in all its glory in a nice setting. But I found that after I free-motion quilted it and bound it, it was a bit out of shape. So it is currently blocking on our spare room floor. Maybe another time I can treat you to some hero shots of this quilt. But here it is in it’s finished state today being coaxed back into square. Really rubbish carpet is awesome for blocking quilts. 🙂
The details
While we wait for more flattering photos in better lighting, I can tell you that I quilted it by outlining all the white areas and then filling them in with a simple meander. I used white 50wt cotton thread given to me by Aurifil on the top, and DecoBob in the bobbin.
I then added horizontal lines to the full-width green strips, and free-motion stars to the blonde ale and dark aqua fabrics.
In hindsight, I think I might have preferred to add quilted heart shapes to the white stripes in the top and bottom borders, but no matter. The stars on the blonde ale fabric were quilted with the 50 wt variegated orange thread given to me by Aurifil in my latest Ambassador box.
Do you love the slight puffiness of this quilt? I used a 60% wool/40% polyester blended wadding called Nu-Wool I won at our State Quilt Guild show in July. It’s from a company local to me, MiniJumbuk. It has a nice loft and feels really snuggly…. I bet it is warm. But I won’t find anyone here willing to test it for a while… the temps are headed into the very high 30°C’s this week (39°C/102F on Thurs)!
And yes, I intend to pattern up this design if you’d like to make a bedtime labyrinth quilt. But I think I’d better get started on my December challenge quilt first. I don’t want to be late two projects running!
Now, let me show you what Melva put in our linky party last week!
