The Scoop on The World’s Strangest Poop!

My daughter wants me to sew appliqué poop onto my latest quilt.

Yup. You just read that. And it’s totally true. My 10 year old daughter is on a mission to have scat immortalised on the quilt I am making for her younger brother. And what is possibly even more astonishing – my 8 year old son has declined the offer.

In my daughter’s defense, it is an animal quilt. And the poop she wants on the quilt is very specific. Wombat scat! And she has a pretty good reason……

Wombat Scat is Cubic!

No joke! Wombat poo is six-sided. And, those sides are scaringly square. Animal experts have claimed for a long time that the reason why wombat poop is cubic is: so that it doesn’t roll away from where it was ceremoniously placed. And apparently that is important because wombats are very territorial, have a great sense of smell and lousy eyesight. So they leave each other cubic smelli-grams that stay put.

Did you get my message, honey?!  Wombat picture from pixabay.com

The reason why wombat poop has been topical in our household lately, is that the “how” of wombat scat formation has recently been deciphered. Apparently the wombat bowel has alternating sections that are super stretchy and sections that are rigid. As the plant matter eaten by the wombat passes through these sections it is formed into pellets with distinctly flat sides with discreet edges and corners. Remarkable!

And the reason that my daughter wants this fact immortalised on her brother’s quilt is that the said quilt features a wombat. And not just any wombat. But a tangram wombat created from squares and other simple geometric shapes. She wants the wombat made of squares to also be producing squares. Wonder where she got her sicko sense of humour from……

So, she thinks the wombat tangram should be upgraded, to something like this:

Being the responsible and mature parent that I am, I was totally going to do this. But my usually offbeat son said “no”. I’ll ask him again tomorrow.

In the meantime, while you wait with bated breath for the poop conundrum to be squared away, here are further pictures of the Australian animal tangrams on my quilt-in-progress.

Before the end of the month I plan to have a finish to show you for this quilt…. poop or no poop. And I have one last surprise – an extra dose of whimsy to be added to this Whimsical and Wonky Island Batik project that does have my son’s approval.

I will also try to answer some technique questions people have written in about my appliqué process as well.

Colour Inspiration Linky is going on Holidays

Tuesday next week is Christmas, and the one after is New Year’s Day. So, the Chameleon is going to take a short break and Colour Inspiration Tuesday will return on the 8th January 2019. Today’s party will remain open over the break if your New Year’s resolution happens to be “attend the Chameleon’s party every week” and you want to get started straight away. 🙂 And I will blog as the whim takes me in between.

So then, our last feature for 2018 is from Denise at For the Love of Geese. Denise has been sharing her progress on a new paper-pieced design, and has now finished this magnificent quilt. Here is the picture she shared last Tuesday.

The finished quilt can actually now be viewed in her post here. Denise is also running a giveaway in return for “your most useful tools and or tips that make your longarm or fmq quilting easier”. If you are quick you still have time to participate and be in the running for a copy of her Xando quilt pattern.

If you’ve been featured, you can find a badge of honour here. My sincerest thanks to everyone else who linked up last week too.

  1. Well, who knew a quilting post would give us the scoop on poop?! How interesting, and I never realized how cute wombats are! Thanks for the fun post!

  2. LOL!!! It’s always a learning experience here on your blog! Now I’ve got the scoop on wombat poop!!!!! I have to say, it was a fun read today. My favorite Alaska girl learned to sew last year and made a poop emoji pillow for her friend for Christmas. I’d like to say that was over the top…but I’ve got moose poop ornies on my tree! Who am I can say? 🙂 Have a fabulous holiday!

  3. Thank you for taking interest in my quilt and giveaway. Being a lover of animals I am very curious about your ongoing project and cant wait to see it finished. I enjoy reading posts about your little ones, I always get a chuckle.
It doesn’t matter how the story of the mysterious case of wombat poop turns out, this will be one they always remember. Good luck on this one. As always, thank you for the linky party and Merry Christmas to you all.

  4. Cool quilt! And I totally understand your daughter. Before I quilted, I decorated cakes, starting when I was 14. Back then, I made a Christmas cake decorated with icing trees from ice cream cones, and added a plastic deer figurine to the setting. My brothers thought it immensely funny to add ‘deer droppings’, using chocolate sprinkles. Though I didn’t appreciate it at the time, I now find it quite funny!

  5. You never know what you’ll learn in the big wide world of quilting! Maybe the scat could be quilted in so it’s there but not so visible (if your son is still saying no!) Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.

  6. Hi Dione! I am giggling over Wendy’s comment, and have to agree that the wombat is very cute. Who knew?!! I think this quilt will be fabulous with or without the scat, but I suppose we’ll have to wait for the new year to see the final decision. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Enjoy! I look forward to what 2019 holds for all of us. Happy Tuesday. ~smile~ Roseanne

  7. I’d like to give animal tangrams a try and if I do make a wombat, I’ll definitely include the cubic scat!! I really like your daughter’s idea!! This is going to be a beautiful quilt!! Have a blessed Christmas with those you hold dear!!

  8. OK this is not what I expected. Ha ha. I should know by now that there is always something unexpected in Chameleon’s blogs. Terrific little story and so glad to have gained some unexpected knowledge about scat! Maybe this would be a good bar bet (something my husband says about interesting or unusual facts)! Oh, and by the way, I love the tangram animals. Happy Thursday to you!

  9. Love the post!! I saw the pic of the platypus. The platypus has always had a fanciful place in my heart. I remember doing a report on the unique animal in grade school. Brought a smile to my face.
    Thanks so much!
