Lunarcy Quilt: Year of the Dog Block Release Day
Dog Days: the hot, sultry, uncomfortable days of the Northern Hemisphere summer corresponding to the annual rise of Sirius (the Dog Star) over the horizon. Yuck.
Sirius (and its doggy constellation Canis Major) is a feature of the summer sky here in the Southern Hemisphere too. And since this past week was hot, sultry and super uncomfortable here… I’m proclaiming that our own Dog Days are upon us.
This was Arkaroola on Sunday. What you can’t see is the stinking-hot gales of wind to go with the humidity. It was still 42C (107F) at 6pm despite the dust and gloom. Yuck.
So, how best to distract from yucky Dog Days? By releasing the hounds, of course! And if that all sounds like Lunarcy, well…. Perfect. Because by my reckoning, it’s time for the Lunarcy Year of the Dog.
At Arkaroola lately…
… I am possibly biting off more than I can chew. Really?! Never…..
I’m starting to pack boxes in preparation for our move back to the city, while the kids are still finishing up their school year. Our eldest in particular is madly completing a plethora of major assignments all masterfully procrastinated until the last moment.
Luckily one of her subjects is textile studies, and I know someone who can help with that. 😉 Not that she actually needs much help. Just a bit of encouragement, some firm time management and a few pointers on sewing in zippers (who doesn’t?!). Here’s one of her finished projects, an ice cream-themed cell phone cozy she designed and crocheted all herself. She even worked out how to install the button hole for the “cherry” button. Both proud and crochet jealous of the crafty little mini-me.
In my own sewing space, I have added a second block to my Esmeralda’s Garden collection designed by Suzy of Suzy’s Artsy Craftsy Sitcom. The rabbit in the lucky clover.
I am also working on the finishing touches to my Spring Garden quilt from September. I finished the quilting in the background of the gnome and pool party corners this week.
If I can get this bound, I’ll have a quilt finish for the year! Woot!
And through Dogged Determination…
… we have the next installment in the Lunarcy pattern.
If you were born after Lunar New Year in 2018, 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970, 1958, 1946 or 1934 etc the Dog is your Chinese Zodiac animal and today I am releasing your special block. (Orla V – this one comes with extra special thoughts just for you!) People born in the Year of the Dog are purported to be loyal, honest, just, social and persistent. Just like the canine version, Zodiac Dogs make great friends.
Part Five of the Lunarcy Quilt pattern is available to download via the button below. This new pdf supplies you with all the appliqué templates you’ll need to create the Year of the Dog appliqué and his Chinese lantern.
This quilt pattern is very kindly supported by Island Batik, who supplied all the fabrics to me for the sample. The fabrics I used are detailed in the pattern, and are all from their Foundations Basics and Blenders collections. This means that if you wish to use any or all of the same, they are still available through your favourite Island Batik stockist.
Year of the Dog download
**** It is really important that you print this pdf at 100%, otherwise your pattern pieces will be the wrong size for the quilt blocks. Turn off any “fit to page” options in your printer dialog and ensure that the printout size is set to 100%. There are check boxes supplied in the document. If your printout is successful, these will measure 1″ square. The document is designed to fit on US Letter and A4 paper. ****
Inside the Year of the Dog pdf you will find the templates for the Dog and his lantern, and also an appliqué placement key. The placement of the blossoms is given as a suggestion, but feel free to add as many or as few as you’d like.
The next release will be the Year of the Rooster appliqué.
The Lunarcy Quilt measures 75.5″ x 94″ and is designed for a single/twin bed. Part 1 of the pattern lists the fabric requirements and details how to put the quilt top together. It is your choice whether you prefer to do this before or after the appliqués. You can download Lunarcy Quilt Part 1 here. Part Two of the pattern is the Branches and Blossoms motifs used throughout multiple blocks. There will also be 12 animal appliqué files, of which today’s Dog is the third. You can find the Rat pattern here and the Pig pattern here. The remaining animals will arrive in this order: Rooster, Monkey, Goat, Horse, Snake, Dragon, Rabbit, Tiger and Ox.
I hope you will enjoy making something from this pattern and I’d love to see what you’ve made if you do. If there are any problems with the file, please let me know.
And, your weekly dose of Linky Inspiration….
Here are my Chameleon party highlights for you. Scraps, strings and crumbs abound in the features this week.
Gretchen at Gretchen’s Little Corner linked up her finished scrappy barn quilt flimsy made of log cabins. We took at look at her progress last week, where the layout was square. Gretchen mentioned that she would be extending the quilt to be rectangular, and I was looking forward to seeing how. In case you were also wondering, here it is. Gretchen has also started a new scrappy project (already!)…..
Susan at Quilt Fabrication has a new version of her Celilo Quilt in rainbow scraps and white. I love this version – modern scrappy at its best.
And Turid at Den Syende himmel has a couple of new pin cushions to show. Selvedges and the smallest scraps are regularly repurposed into these cute and useful treasures at Turid’s place.
That’s your Chameleon Quota for the week. Now it’s your turn to share!
Tell us – what are you working on, or have recently finished in your sewing room? We want to know so we can visit and be inspired. Whoa!! 107 – that is crazy!! Love the color palette today
107 and wind, not a fun combo at all. Meanwhile, we are at a chilly 18F here (-7.78C) this morning. I’m happily tucked in here, with a quilt close by. Year of the Dog – that’s me! Woohoo!
I was born in a dog year too. Maybe that’s why all pooches seem to love me. I gather them like a bear flocks to honey. Much as I love summer Dione, I don’t think I would like those temperatures. You folk are tough..Wishing you well with your preparations for returning to the city. There will be many things you miss about Arkaroola, but then every spot has its appeals. Sending hugs
Wow, time to go back to the city already!!? I have so enjoyed your adventures there! But, I enjoy all your adventures! It sounds like you have a prodigy there – like mother, like daughter!! Good for her and her project is really cute! She did a great job! Looking forward to seeing your completed Spring Garden quilt. Don’t injure yourself packing those boxes!!
Yay! My wonderful dog! I hope you are entering this quilt in lots of quilt shows (virtual or otherwise) – you know it is a winner, Dione.
Your Garden Party blocks and Esmeralda’s Garden block are superb – I love the fabrics, and the Gnome’s beard looks real. And, your daughter’s phone case is brilliant – well done!
It looks like you have all had a wonderful experience in the outback, the time seems to have flown by – will you be back home for Christmas?
Take good care all!
LOVE the dog block!! Lunarcy is wonderful, and I wish I were making it, too right now. Definitely on my short-list for upcoming attention. Your Spring Garden quilting work is perfect. I hope all goes well for your move!
Hi,
We are heading into our Winter here….it got down to 24F. last night. There was frost on everything. Like your daughters phone case..really like the bed button. Thank you for providing the patterns for the Lunacy Quilt. I have been downloading them and hope to one day make one. Have a great day!
Wow! It’s time to move back already? That sure went fast – hope all goes well!
UGGG … your dog days sound utterly miserable!!!
But the phone cosy is very cute and you have a talented creator!
Love your blocks … and looking forward to your finish!
Happy Quilting! 🙂
107 and wind…yuk! I was just wondering if you were moving back anytime soon. Good luck with the end of the year and the move. We are going from a 3 to a 2 bedroom unit (from the 3rd floor to the first)…for the dog as he ages and we aren’t here all that much, so we needed to do it. There is no packing going on here, as we have no date. Nothing to brighten up the Chameleon’s party…next time, I hope!
Clever daughter! Wow on the appliqué block, and congrats on releasing another Lunarcy block. Also, big hugs for the move back to the city; wow the year went fast.
