We’re Baaaaack……!
The Chameleon thought about slacking off and skipping another week…..
I know, right?!
It was nice having last week off, but the Chameleon is not really one to pass up on a bit of monkey business. So here we are – and monkey business is exactly what we shall have today. It’s time to look at the Year of the Monkey block of the Lunarcy quilt.
Also, I thought you might like to see where we travelled last week. We went to Coober Pedy and stayed in an underground dugout apartment. Coober Pedy, is the “opal capital of the world”, and is renowned for its underground accommodation; we had a really lovely time there.
Year of the Monkey block, Lunarcy Quilt style
The second-to-last block on the Lunarcy quilt is the adorable monkey.
Disclaimer: Island Batik supplied these fabrics to me free of charge to create the prototype Lunarcy BOM available here soon at Clever Chameleon for the remainder of 2020.
The lantern is a smallish one this week to fit around the monkey appliqué.
Lunarcy in Coober Pedy
Here is your first peek at the finished Lunarcy quilt top – on a bed in the Coober Pedy dugout. See the walls of machined stone? The rooms are dug straight into the hill.
There are no windows in the rooms at the back of the unit of course, but it never felt dark or claustrophobic. Lots of natural light comes in the front windows into the kitchen and living area. There are three B&B apartments built into this old opal mine.
The view outwards was vast and amazing and changed constantly with the light. Somehow the nothingness was very calming.
We had regular visitors. A Euro mum and her half grown joey live on the dugout hill, and while very wary of us, they were never too far away. They were persistently advertising their services as garbage-disposal-units, specialising in unwanted vegetables.
This is what the township of Coober Pedy looks like from the central hill. Many of the structures have underground sections. Coober Pedy has underground hotels, underground shops, even underground churches. Not persecuted churches – churches that are built underground!
Here is the inside of the underground Serbian Orthodox Church.
We are back in Arkaroola again now. But I still have lots of interesting things to show from our short Coober Pedy adventure. And the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens in Port Augusta too. So hopefully I will get the opportunity to show you the rest next week. Along with the last Lunarcy block; the Year of the Rooster.
In the meantime, it’s going to get quite cold here later this week! Maybe even rain.
Warm at heart, though
After several weeks off, there is something for everyone in the latest Chameleon’s party.
First up: Vasudha at Storied Quilts has another modern zinger! Her latest finish is a covid quilt called “Containment” and it’s going to feature in a book called “Quarantine Quilts”. Congrats Vasudha! Head over to find out how Vasudha made this amazing quilt and see all the fascinating details.
Susan at Quilt Fabrication shared more of her quilting wisdom in a crumb block video tutorial. So if you have mini scraps of bizarre shapes and a yen to make something with them, this could be just the ticket. Susan’s crumbs look terrific in pinwheels like this one below.
Pam of Pam’s Paintbox has been continuing her amazing work on her Piecemakers Calendar Quilt. Have a look at these gorgeous blocks! You definitely want to bounce over to Pam’s place for a better look at her beautiful project!
We have added a new friend to our blog rounds this week. Allison at A Messy House is a Sign of a Happy Quilter linked up her fun fussy cut blocks. A plus for all of us 🙂
And Daughters of Dorinda shared these sweet Feathered Goose blocks she made. I just love the way she photographed them. So does the Chameleon, the little monkey!
And that’s all I’ve got time for today, so it’s……
Time for another Party!

Now that looks like someplace I would feel right at home. Very interesting town indeed and I’m really excited to see the rest of your photos. Your quilt turned out spectacular and I LOVE all the monkeys.
How strange and unusual! And interesting!!! Great job on your quilt coming together!
Hi,
Love the Lunacy Quilt…so bright and colorful…who would have thought of living underground could be so beautiful…awesome idea! Have a great day!
What an interesting place to stay. Those views are amazing. I would’ve been happy just seeing the kangaroo!
The Lunarcy quilt is absolutely fabulous! And Coober Pedy is fascinating. What an intriguing place.
Hi Dione! Coober Pedy!!! I’ve seen CP on The Amazing Race – the teams visited there and they showed some of the opal mines. How fascinating that you can actually stay in a B&B there. That is a place I’d like to visit someday. Lunacy is nearing completion – it looks so pretty on the bed. I hope you are staying warm with that cold spell on its way. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
What an interesting place Coober Pedy is…and fun that your quilt made it there. It looks great. I am glad you wrote, although I do understand the need for a break.
Oh very interesting – I’ve just finished reading a novel about the Opal mines and the underground houses etc. Great to see your photos to back up the pictures in my mind 🙂
Wow, Dione! Coober Pedy sounds fascinating, and the landscape looks like something out of a Star Wars movie. Like Luke Skywalker’s little space ship is about to touch down. Your monkey appliqué came out great. Thanks for sharing highlights of your vacation with us!
Loved seeing your photos, Dione!! Would love to visit Coober Pedy. That underground church is amazing!! Glad you had a restful time. Life is so crazy right now, anytime you can slip away for a vaca, long or short, is wonderful!
Wow, what a neat place! And Lunacy looks terrific! Thanks for showing it in your underground/dugout room.
Hi Dione, so, does the chameleon like cheeky monkeys or are they competition 🙂 Wow, an underground town. Only in the desert could you do that (I think). I’ve been down inside of abandoned mines in Northern Ontario but the rock is not pretty (part of the Cambrian Shield) and it’s cold and humid. Coober Pedy sounds amazing. It’s now on my bucket list! Love the monkey. Your quilt top looks great on the bed! Take care.
That little lantern is shining right to Norway.
