Lunarcy Quilt: Year of the Rabbit Block Release Day
The Chameleon is a Rabbit. He argued his case last week to be a Dragon, but the prosecution asserts that he first popped into existence in 2011. That is, during the most recent Year of the Rabbit. And a birthday is a birthday – so a Rabbit he is, and a Rabbit he must stay.
Actually, the Chameleon seems to be taking the rebuttal quite well now, really. He says he likes being a Rabbit after all. Rabbits are dangerous and scary. Super scary. Take the specimen on our latest colour scheme for instance. Definitely a killer bunny.
A killer bunny, you say?! I don’t think so.
The Chameleon knows you don’t *want* it to be a killer bunny, but he says he has an eye for such things. So, he wants you to have a careful think: Are you are sure it’s not a killer bunny?!
Really sure?!
You have to admit, the Chameleon has considerable experience in the arts of disguise and camouflage….. I wouldn’t blink if I were you.
You are here for the Lunarcy, right? Expecting sanity around here would be lunacy at the best of times, and the moon is nearly full again. It is, apparently, going to be a Wolf Moon….. the Rabbit on the Moon shall have big teeth and Lunarcy abounds! bahahaha! 😀
OK…….. enough silliness. Time to download the Year of the Rabbit Lunarcy quilt pattern before all this comes back to bite me.
In the Chameleon’s corner this week
I haven’t done a lot of quilting this week, but I have done some hand sewing. Mostly altering high school uniforms (hems, buttons, that sort of thing, meh) – not very exciting but necessary, and I am thankful to have the skills to do it myself. I have also done one piece of hand sewing for me.
I have added a hanging sleeve to “Spring Garden Party” quilt, in line with my January One Monthly Goal. Which I think I actually forgot to link up to Elm Street Quilts in the end! That’s what comes of burning candles at both ends with a blowtorch. But anyway, no matter. It is the motivation of setting the goal that counts, and it is paying off regardless. I still have to make a couple of labels for this quilt by the end of the month – it should be ok, the kids are back at school tomorrow. My details will be on a stock standard corner label, but I also intend to make a second label to list all the pattern designers whose work is included in my It’s a Garden Party Row Along quilt montage.
I never did show you this quilt with its binding on either. So here it is.
And don’t feel too sorry for me with all that dull hand sewing. I was mostly hanging out in Second Valley with extended family. And that looked mostly like this…..
Tough gig, not! It was scorching hot though. We only went down to the bay first thing or in the early evening.
Consequently, no progress on my plans for the Charm Quilt this week. but I hope you’ve been musing the possibilities this new project might bring to your sewing room. If you missed last week’s announcement you can find more details here.
And now to the Year of the Rabbit Lunarcy block….
If you were born after Lunar New Year in 2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951, 1939 or 1927 etc the Rabbit is your Chinese Zodiac animal and today I am releasing your special block.
The Rabbit is the fourth animal in the Chinese zodiac and the twelfth download in the Lunarcy series. The story of the Rabbit’s placing in the zodiac is very similar to one you are likely to be familiar with – the Tortoise and the Hare. In the Chinese legend, Rabbit is boastful about his speed, especially to his neighbour, Ox. During the Emperor’s great race the Rabbit set off early, but was so sure of his win that he went aside and took a nap. He was overtaken by three animals while he was asleep – the Rat, the Ox and the Tiger, and so he came fourth.
Year of the Rabbit people are traditionally considered to be quite lovely – gentle, quiet, elegant, and alert as well as quick, skillful, kind, patient, and very responsible. Rabbits, as alluded to earlier, also represent the moon – as well as purity. There are also important myths about the Moon Rabbit in multiple Asian cultures referring to the shadows visible on the moon’s surface.
Part Twelve of the Lunarcy Quilt pattern is available to download via the button below. This new pdf supplies you with all the appliqué templates you’ll need to create the Year of the Rabbit appliqué and his Chinese lantern.
This quilt pattern is very kindly supported by Island Batik, who supplied all the fabrics to me for the sample. The fabrics I used are detailed in the pattern, and are all from their Foundations Basics and Blenders collections. This means that if you wish to use any or all of the same, they are still available through your favourite Island Batik stockist.
Year of the Rabbit download
**** It is really important that you print this pdf at 100%, otherwise your pattern pieces will be the wrong size for the quilt blocks. Turn off any “fit to page” options in your printer dialog and ensure that the printout size is set to 100%. There are check boxes supplied in the document. If your printout is successful, these will measure 1″ square. The document is designed to fit on US Letter and A4 paper. ****
Inside the Year of the Rabbit pdf you will find the templates for the rabbit and his lantern, and also an appliqué placement key. The placement of the blossoms is given as a suggestion, but feel free to add as many or as few as you’d like.
The next (and second-to-last) release will be the Year of the Tiger appliqué.
The Lunarcy Quilt measures 75.5″ x 94″ and is designed for a single/twin bed. Part 1 of the pattern lists the fabric requirements and details how to put the quilt top together. It is your choice whether you prefer to do this before or after the appliqués. You can download Lunarcy Quilt Part 1 here. Part Two of the pattern is the Branches and Blossoms motifs used throughout multiple blocks. There will also be 12 animal appliqué files, of which today’s Rabbit is the tenth. You can still find the Rat pattern, the Pig pattern, the Dog pattern, the Rooster pattern, the Monkey pattern, the Goat pattern, the Horse Pattern, the Snake pattern and the Dragon pattern at their respective links. The remaining animals will are Tiger and Ox. Wow, very close to done now!
I hope you will enjoy making something from this pattern and I’d love to see what you’ve made if you do. If there are any problems with the file, please let me know.
And, your weekly dose of Linky Inspiration….
Susan of Quilt Fabrication has linked up her progress in the Stay at Home (the Chameleon does not mind if he does) Round Robin 2. It starts with your choice of medallion centre and is followed by regular instructions for rounds of borders to enlarge it. You can still join in this sew along if you’d like. Susan has all the details, minus the stay-at-home-Chameleon of course.
Carol of Quilt Schmilt linked up her weekly progress post. A Christmas quilt and a Hearts on Fire-themed cushion were notable and fun finishes this week. You can also find the full story of this useful heart cushion on Carol’s blog here.
Vasudha at Storied Quilts has a newly published quilt that might take your fancy. It certainly took mine! You can get this pattern in the latest edition (No 38) of the Australian digital quilting magazine Make Modern (affiliate link). Isn’t Vasudha’s quilt fresh and fascinating? There is a small trick in the fabric choice, which Vasudha shares in her post.
Gretchen at Gretchen’s Little Corner has the centre of this Jacob’s ladder done. Calm and soothing and chocolatey…. and bunny coloured. It is now to receive some killer appliqué on the borders.
Finally, It seems it’s that time of year when people are looking to reduce their scrap hoards. If you are looking for ideas to work down your scrap basket, here’s a selection. You can find more details, clockwise from top left at Sew Yummy, Food for Thought, Quilting Patchwork Appliqué, Donnaleeq and Making a Lather.
And one extra plug as a proud Aussie on Australia Day today….
Make Modern is one of my favourite digital magazines and is proudly produced by several Australians – including in my home city of Adelaide. It is always full of fun projects big and small…. like this amazing beagle bag! You would not have to worry about killer bunnies when you were out and about if you’d made yourself one of these!
Make Modern can currently be purchased as individual issues ($10AUD, <$8US), 6 monthly subscriptions ($21AUD, <$17US), 12 monthly subscriptions ($40AUD, <$31US) and all access subscriptions ($99AUD, <$77US), so there are options for any budget (affiliate link – your price will not vary if you choose to use this link to make a purchase, but the Clever Chameleon may receive a small commission for the referral).

Killer rabbits, I don’t know, if they sneak into my garden, they could be killed rabbits, as the dog is determined it is their proper treatment (unfortunately, as the are so cute), thus I have to go out first to scare them off to live another day. And your rabbit block definitely falls in the adorable category!
Spring Garden Party is so pretty, you have made such a lovely quilt out of the patterns on offer, credit to both you and the other designers. Love the pictures too, especially the lantana with the butterfly, I grow them in our summer, such lovely splashes of colour.
Thanks for the pattern and your blog. Take good care Dione.
Congratulations on reaching your OMG, your Spring Garden Party is lovely!
Thank you for continuing the lunarcy quilt patterns. My sweet niece is due in May 2021 and I want to do a baby quilt for her little ox.

Killer bunny – made me think of the card game! Happy Australia Day!
Killer rabbit – monty python? I love it! Yes, I bet the chameleon could turn into a rabbit but certainly not a killer rabbit. I am glad you spent time with extended family. Looks like a lovely place to be!
