Lunarcy Quilt: Year of the Tiger Block Release Day

I was, for a very long time as a child and teen, fascinated with big cats; especially tigers. So beautiful, sleek, powerful, mysterious – I had tiger shirts, tiger jigsaws, tiger books, tiger toys….. I even had a real tiger whisker, given to me by a keeper at the Adelaide Zoo. I loved everything about tigers (except the smell!). I would have probably traded a kidney for a domestic orange cat with black stripes in the likeness of Jim Davis’ Garfield, just so I could pretend I owned a mini tiger. 😀 Some girls loved horses, I loooved tigers.

While my tiger mania has eased over the years to a more casual, kidney-friendly admiration, the Year of the Tiger remains reflexively my favourite in the Lunar calendar. So it gives me great pleasure to finally be releasing the Lunarcy Tiger pattern today. Excitingly, it is also the last Lunarcy pattern to be released until Chinese New Year 2021, when we will celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Ox on time and in style. Despite everything in 2020, we’ve made it!

In the Chameleon’s corner this week

one monthly goal jan/feb

School has gone back but I am still mostly AWOL from the sewing room as we get life and routines reestablished. Thankfully I set one goal at the beginning of January, so I had one doable task for the month to focus on, and consequently I got it done. As well as the hanging sleeve I added last week, I’ve actually finished labelling the Spring Garden Party quilt with all my details, and the list of the designers whose patterns I integrated into the final quilt. And as a bonus, the boss approved of my work…. opportunistic little so and so!

So that is my January One Monthly Goal (as defined by Elm Street Quilts) totally sorted.

For my February One Monthly Goal, I intend to make a proper dust cover for my daughter’s digital piano. Or more specifically, start on one. As you can see here, my daughter is using a scrap piece of fabric to mostly cover her keyboard, and has been doing so for some time – a couple of years I think. It is definitely time to bump this project to the top of the queue!

By the end of February I intend to have the keyboard cover designed and pieced/appliquéd ready for quilting. While a full finish would be nice, I am keeping my goal small to allow me to also finish the Lunarcy patterns and get the Charmed 2021 quilt up and running.

Speaking of Charmed 2021, I wasn’t able to spend much time on developing the Charm Quilt this week, unfortunately. So I have had to have a wee rethink about the timing of this project. To launch it properly, without undue stress, I have decided to postpone the start date until at least March. Hopefully only until March.

I wanted to begin in February so I could start with love/friendship-themed charms under the valentine umbrella, but it is more important that this project remains realistic for me and stays fun. This change will also let me savour the finish of the Lunarcy patterns and also give me time to look into a local quilt guild opportunity that suddenly arose for me yesterday…. always too many irons in the Chameleon’s fire, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

And now to the Year of the Tiger Lunarcy block….

The second-to-last Lunarcy pattern! If you were born after Lunar New Year in 2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950, 1938 or 1926 etc the Tiger is your Chinese Zodiac animal and today I am releasing your special block.

The Tiger is the third animal in the Chinese zodiac and the thirteenth download in the Lunarcy series. The Tiger was third animal to finish in the Emperor’s race because he was powerful and fast, and was able to swim the river that otherwise slowed down many of the other animal entrants. The Tiger’s traditional personality is considered to be strong-willed, passionate, brave, adventurous, entrepreneurial, confident and just. Not someone to be trifled with!

Part Thirteen of the Lunarcy Quilt pattern is available to download via the button below. This new pdf supplies you with all the appliqué templates you’ll need to create the Year of the Tiger appliqué and his Chinese lantern.

This quilt pattern is very kindly supported by Island Batik, who supplied all the fabrics to me for the sample. The fabrics I used are detailed in the pattern, and are all from their Foundations Basics and Blenders collections. This means that if you wish to use any or all of the same, they are still available through your favourite Island Batik stockist.

**** It is really important that you print this pdf at 100%, otherwise your pattern pieces will be the wrong size for the quilt blocks. Turn off any “fit to page” options in your printer dialog and ensure that the printout size is set to 100%. There are check boxes supplied in the document. If your printout is successful, these will measure 1″ square. The document is designed to fit on US Letter and A4 paper. ****

Inside the Year of the Tiger pdf you will find the templates for the tiger and his lantern, and also an appliqué placement key. The placement of the blossoms is given as a suggestion, but feel free to add as many or as few as you’d like.

The next and very last Lunarcy release will be the Year of the Ox appliqué to celebrate Chinese New Year 2021.

The Lunarcy Quilt measures 75.5″ x 94″ and is designed for a single/twin bed. Part 1 of the pattern lists the fabric requirements and details how to put the quilt top together. It is your choice whether you prefer to do this before or after the appliqués. You can download Lunarcy Quilt Part 1 here. Part Two of the pattern is the Branches and Blossoms motifs used throughout multiple blocks. There will also be 12 animal appliqué files, of which today’s Tiger is the eleventh. You can still find the Rat pattern, the Pig pattern, the Dog pattern, the Rooster pattern, the Monkey pattern, the Goat pattern, the Horse Pattern, the Snake pattern, the Dragon pattern and the Rabbit pattern at their respective links.

I hope you will enjoy making something from this pattern and I’d love to see what you’ve made if you do. If there are any problems with the file, please let me know.

And, your weekly dose of Linky Inspiration….

Frédérique of Quilting Patchwork Appliqué has wowed me with her fussy cutting this week. Look at the flamingos on this mug rug…. the top ones are fussy cut from the front of the fabric, and the bottom ones are from the reverse of the fabric. The overall effect is a set of wonderful flamingo reflections….. yes, I know!

Wendy of Pieceful Thoughts linked up a very special gift she made for her son recently. It incorporates a photo print made using Spoonflower’s services and is made in Wendy’s son’s favourite art style; Vaporwave. The Vaporwave aesthetic is a very distinctive art style, and if you google it you will be impressed by how well Wendy has captured its essence in fabric. No mean feat. I enjoyed stretching my knowledge horizons this week with Wendy’s post.

Turid at Den syende himmel has been fussy cutting – like Frédérique…. but with hexies. Turid is a pro at fussy cutting hexies and other english paper pieced shapes – this time her hexies are made into an adorable hotpad themed with sewing tools and notions.

And this week’s party would not be complete unless I showed you Gail’s latest finish. Gail at Quilting Gail has lined up a Winnie the Pooh quilt. Or more importantly, a quilt with Tigger the tiger on it! Impeccable timing Gail! Tigger is hanging out with his friends while still being his unique self on this panel quilt finish by Gail the UFO-busting queen.

  1. Thanks for the highlight. I’m so glad you enjoyed the Vaporwave-inspired quilt! While I was one of those girls who wanted a horse, my favorite Pooh character is still Tigger. Fun post to read this week!

  2. Love the Tiger, Dione, my Dad was a Tiger. It’s funny, I’m still fascinated by all the big cats too, but as for pets, in a dog person (due to being born in the year of the Dog?). I wanted to be a vet way back when. Funny how those trips to the zoo really influence us.
I can’t imagine how busy you must be after living somewhere else for a year, you and your family need to take the time to get settled in at home again. Looking forward to Charmed whenever you,re ready.
    Take care, be safe.
