Lunarcy Quilt: Year of the Ox Block Release Day (Final installment)
Happy New Year! Happy Lunar New Year that is, wished for you for this coming Friday – the 12th of February 2021. Holy cow, it’s goodbye Year of the Rat 2020 and heeeelloooo Year of the Ox!
Why all the ox-citement? Well, today marks the end of our epic 2020 Lunarcy quilt pattern journey. It is time to release of the Year of the Ox pattern, the last of our twelve collectible animal appliqués representing the Chinese zodiac. With all twelve appliqués now available to you, they can be arranged all together into one large quilt, or used singularly in the centre of a personalised baby quilt or wall hanging. And with a little heifer-t, I’m sure you can think of many more ways to use these patterns to celebrate your own lunar animal or a special birth.
Join me today to collect your last Lunarcy pattern, ready to ring in the newest New Year. Happy Year of the Ox!
In the Chameleon’s corner this week
one monthly goal february
Last week I mentioned that I want to make a cover for my daughter’s digital piano this month. Well, so far it’s going well…. said daughter has been consulted and she would like it made from the scraps of a favourite quilt I made her many years ago.
I have found some of the relevant scraps already. I’m not entirely sure how many of the other fabrics had leftovers, as I did use them for the backing too. But I won’t start sewing until I have had a better rummage through my stash first to locate any others.
So far….

also still settling in
When we went away for the year in 2020, my sewing space became a storage zone for things we did not take with us. And it is still not emptied yet. So, much of my fabric is still in boxes or hidden away and I have been sewing in temporary spaces….. mostly with my sewing machine perched on my ironing table set up at a low height! I’m not desperate…. much 😀 My Sweet Sixteen was not set up at all. This week I finally moved these both back into their permanent positions.
Of course, I then *had* to take some time out to rebond witht my babies, especially with my Sweet Sixteen – check it was still oiled and running well etc etc….. so a little appliqué stitching on my Esmeralda’s Garden project felt in order. I decided to work on one of my favourite blocks: the frog.
This is my interpretation of a design by Suzy Meyers of Suzy’s Sitcom. You can find out more about this project here.
Isn’t the frog the sweetest? Probably a bullfrog….
And now to the Year of the Ox Lunarcy block….
The very last Lunarcy pattern! If you were born after Lunar New Year in 2009, 1997, 1985, 1973, 1961, 1949, 1937 or 1925 etc the Ox is your Chinese Zodiac animal, you are about to enter “your year”, and today I am releasing your special block.
The Ox is the second animal in the Chinese zodiac and the fourteenth download in the Lunarcy series. The Ox was the second animal to finish in the story of the Emperor’s race, having been outfoxed by the Rat who won by riding him across the river. But it seems the Ox handled the setback with good grace, and people born in the Year of the Ox are seen as honest, hardworking and diligent. The endurance, composure and positivity of the Ox are traits that I truly hope we will find defining 2021!
Part Fourteen of the Lunarcy Quilt pattern is available to download via the button below. This new pdf supplies you with all the appliqué templates you’ll need to create the Year of the Ox appliqué and his Chinese lantern. In conjunction with all the previous downloads, you now have all the patterns you need to make your own Lunarcy quilt.
This quilt pattern is very kindly supported by Island Batik, who supplied all the fabrics to me for the sample. The fabrics I used are detailed in the pattern, and are all from their Foundations Basics and Blenders collections. This means that if you wish to use any or all of the same, they are still available through your favourite Island Batik stockist.
Year of the Ox download
**** It is really important that you print this pdf at 100%, otherwise your pattern pieces will be the wrong size for the quilt blocks. Turn off any “fit to page” options in your printer dialog and ensure that the printout size is set to 100%. There are check boxes supplied in the document. If your printout is successful, these will measure 1″ square. The document is designed to fit on US Letter and A4 paper. ****
Inside the Year of the Ox pdf you will find the templates for the ox and his lantern, and also an appliqué placement key. The placement of the blossoms is given as a suggestion, but feel free to add as many or as few as you’d like.
And that’s it. The Lunarcy is over. No more Lunarcy at the Chameleon’s place.
Yeah, right…
What do you call a yak caught spruiking foolish wisdom?
An oxymoron.
The Lunarcy Quilt measures 75.5″ x 94″ and is designed for a single/twin bed. Part 1 of the pattern lists the fabric requirements and details how to put the quilt top together. It is your choice whether you prefer to do this before or after the appliqués. You can download Lunarcy Quilt Part 1 here. Part Two of the pattern is the Branches and Blossoms motifs used throughout multiple blocks. There are also 12 animal appliqué files, of which today’s Ox is the last. You can still find the Rat pattern, the Pig pattern, the Dog pattern, the Rooster pattern, the Monkey pattern, the Goat pattern, the Horse Pattern, the Snake pattern, the Dragon pattern, the Rabbit pattern and the Tiger pattern at their respective links.
I hope you will enjoy making something from this pattern and I’d love to see what you’ve made if you do. If there are any problems with the files, please let me know.
And, your weekly dose of Linky Inspiration….
Lots of problem solving and finishing has been going on in the Clever Chameleon community lately! Here’s a taste….
Kathleen of Kathleen McMusing has a fabulous story this week to share about a quilt she rescued for a cousin. The original quilt was 58 years old, well loved and in a very bad way. Take a look at what she and her cousin made of the old quilt to go another generation or two! And while you’re there, check out the recent TGIFF links as well.
Sew Yummy has chronicled her experiences of sewing with flannel. It wasn’t the easiest job, which you’ll probably appreciate if you’ve tried it yourself. But the results are very sweet. And there are quite a few tips in the comments to help you if you’re looking at making a flannel quilt yourself. A post that will give you the warm fuzzies. 🙂
Finally, Turid at Den syende himmel has finished a project we have been here admiring for a while…. her scrappy pineapple quilt. Everytime I see this project, I want to make one….. heaven knows I have more than enough scraps! If you love scrap quilts, or want to love scrap quilts, you need to head over to Turid’s post and admire this amazing example…. and also her very fun quilt in the snow photography!
Now, it’s your turn….

Thank you very much. Really enjoyed them.
Thanks Dionne for another fabulous project. You certainly do think outside the box.
Such a beautiful quilt, Dione. Another prize winner I am certain. Thanks for the patterns, top on my list as soon as I finish a lot of UFOs that need to be revisited this year. Love your Esmeralda’s Garden, are you doing it as a quilt as you go, or have you done an extra frog as a cushion cover?
Take care, and I’ll be popping in on the next blog post.
Congrats on your finish, Dione!! Your quilt is lovely. Hope you are settling in back home!
Your daughter’s quilt will be great. I love the colours. Thanks for making me feel important. I can recommend a pineapple quilt. It’s so fun.
Don’t feel overwhelmed! Slowly but surely everything will come back together. You’ve already taken the step to spend time with your sweet 16!
Congratulations on the end of the Lunarcy QAL! It is a fab project and has been so much fun to follow. Thank that Chameleon for the feature – very sweet to showcase the quilt and TGIFF. Off to pack my sewing room; hope you get yours unpacked soon. I have a small move coming up in the same building, but delayed by the management…..horrors….but all will be well soon.
Thank you Dionne for another wonderful QAL. I’ve so enjoyed following your blog, reading your posts and following your adventures. The Chameleon is pretty cute and does bring a smile to my face when I see his lovely colour changes. 😉
Hi Dione, Congratulations on getting your Lanarcy Project shared and done. I’m always amazed by your energy and the beautiful quilts that you make and share. Good luck with your daughter’s keyboard cover – I love those fabrics. I’m sure that it will look great. Thanks for hosting. Take care.
